How can I get salon blow dried look at home when I’m utterly incompetent with a haidryer

Just went to the hairdresser yesterday for a cut and blow dry and omg, my hair looks and feels like hair instead of the usual garden broom. I HAVE to learn how to do this myself. I don’t have a dressing table and skills. I can’t afford to go for a blow dry once a week. Please teach my blow dry for dummies? I have longish thickish straight hair that s super drrrrry.

I think there is some telepathy at work here.

There is a warehouse type shop near me that js selling the OneStep at a really reduced price. I looked at it and walked past without thinking too much of it. Now I see I actually really need this gadget.

I have two questions though. I have short bob, will this work on me? I do currently dry with a barrel brush and dryer. Whixn takes forever.

I think these are the older version which they are trying to get rid of, as the box is a bit different to the one a Googled at a boots type shop. This one seems to be oval. Is this the one I need? They have a paddle one as well but I don't think that is going to work, as I need a round brush to style it.

Seems I'm off out shopping tomorrow then..... It's about 15 pounds if I convert.

But I can't seem to work out what the difference is with the newer model.

This is the one I'm looking at:

I am useless with a hairdryer and got the Revlon 1 step. I could get my thin, fine hair to look swishy and lovely with it and found it easy to use but it's knackered my hair which now looks like straw and has broken off at the mid level especially at the sides. That could be because my hair is so fine and thin though. I did section it and follow YouTube videos on how to use it.

Yes that's the one . My hair is just above my shoulders and works well . £15 is a bargain!

Do you use heat protecter? I have no damage and use it every other day but as I said earlier the BBH ruined my hair.

Notcoolmum · 28/07/2022 22:15

@Fuuuuuckit oh wow I've been looking for an air wrap dupe but not wanting to risk an unknown brand. How does this compare? I used the brush attachment on my mum's air wrap and my hair looked amazing. Too expensive though.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 28/07/2022 22:31

Picked up my one-step earlier. Not played with it yet!

efeslight · 28/07/2022 22:32

I have what i call candy floss hair, dry and wispy. Am nearly 50 and my hair has a slight wave, not completely straight.
Really interested in these suggestions.
Can anyone recommended which would be better please?

MrsGamgee · 28/07/2022 22:38

I know I'm late to the thread but I have been using the Revlon One Step for a couple of years now and I would NEVER go back to a normal hairdryer. I use mine on towel dried hair, section it off and always end up with nicely finished hair. My hair is long, quite thick and naturally wavy (a messy wave, not a nice wave)

I used to have to straighten my hair after drying for it to look decent but I never straighten it now.

When my original One Step died I ordered a new one straight away. I have tried the Babyliss big hair but couldn't get to grips with the rotating barrel!

Pifflewiffle · 28/07/2022 23:08

MrsPellegrino. I did use heat protector and it was great for a while. Then gradually my hair started breaking off at the sides which is where my hair is thinnest. I do have very fragile, crap hair though which it doesn’t sound like the OP has.

Battlecat98 · 28/07/2022 23:26

I have the GHD glide and it is amazing. Really didn't like the Revlon one step, left my hair all frizzy on top. I have very thick, frizzy hair. Just had a kerrastraight and it's amazing. I also rate the GHD hair dryer.

Does the glide just straighten poker straight or can you get curled under ends with it?

I am a sheep. Well I won't look like one now, as I went to buy the One Step.

I thought I'd give it a quick whizz, although I hadn't washed my hair, I gave it a once over dry, and it does seem more shiny.

It's going to take some getting used to though. The handle is big and I don't quite know what to do with my other hand 😂 I might have to use it alongside the dryer as I not sure how to dry the short part of my hair at the back (graduated bob)

You hold the end of the brush with your other hand and pull it through your hair.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 29/07/2022 20:53

I picked up my Revlon one-step last night and I too am looking less sheepy! Think it’s going to be a game changer here! It’s not exactly looking post-salon but that’s because it’s been 6 months since my last haircut and it’s looking a bit shite now - due a damn good cut before start of term. It’s feeling lovely and smooth and think we’re going to live together very happily ta very much!!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/07/2022 20:58

Hooray😂

EspeciallyDeIighted · 29/07/2022 20:59

I must be doing something wrong with mine because it doesn’t dry it properly and leaves it all flyaway. BBH on the other hand does a brilliant job but is a bit prone to tangling.

sdfsdipf9ue · 29/07/2022 20:59

The Dyson Airwrap is the only thing that has ever worked for me.

Vicliz24 · 29/07/2022 21:12

I have a Babyliss Keratin Shine hot air styler. It doesn't rotate which I find easiest on my frizz . I truly wouldn't be without it .

Nomoretobotsplease · 29/07/2022 22:19

I use velcro rollers - straighten a section with straighteners then put sections while hot into a medium or large velcro roller. Leave for 10-15 mins to cool, hairspray and remove. Works on my v.thick wavy hair.

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 29/07/2022 23:31

If you have thick hair you have to section it to get a good finish whatever dryer you use. Like a lot of things it's fiddly at first but gets easier with practice. They don't have to be super straight, even sections like a hairdresser does, just small enough to ensure the hair is properly dry before moving on to the next section

for the record I've used all the dryers/brushes mentioned on here and my current favourite is the Babyliss Big Hair Petite. I rough dry with the Dyson Supersonic, then section and dry with the BBH, then roll each dried section up into a bendy roller to keep it out of the way while I do the next section. That final step has been a game changer.

This was a top tip.... Thank you. I mean it seems obvious but it isn't until someone tell you. Such better control over my first attempt.

For those with short hair, I thought I might battle with the shorter bits. Actually they were so much easier.

I do have a bit of a pouffed look that I am not used it. But I'm going with it today, otherwise I'll just run my straightners over it, as I usually have that more sleek look.

I'm tempted to go get the paddle brush one too now. That was about 10 pounds converted.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/07/2022 09:34

To stop the pouffed look, you can run the brush over your hair on the outside just like you'd do if you were just brushing your hair with a normal brush.

Anjelika · 30/07/2022 09:47

I have the BBH and have been using it on my fine but prone to frizz hair for years now. Although the brush rotates you have the option not to rotate. I rotate on the back of my hair but not at the sides as I want it straight there and not bouffant or turned under. I am seriously tempted by the Revlon one though having read this post plus some great suggestions for products on here!

I see a few people use Revlon Uniq One which is a fave of mine. I recently bought some Milkshake Incredible Milk which I like too.

My hair has a real kink to it and I cannot ever just leave it to dry naturally. I have bought a Keratin home treatment to use. Getting a hair cut next Saturday and planning to use after that before I go on holiday although I imagine going in a pool every day for 2 weeks might destroy it.

Velvettia · 30/07/2022 10:18

I have the Babyliss Big Hair and the Revlon One Step. The BBH is useless on me as I have fine hair. The ROS is much better but I am petite with small hands and I find it difficult to grasp the HUGE handle and it’s very heavy so my arm gets tired when styling my hair so I have stopped using it.

I have a Diva hairdryer which drys hair quickly and is simply fabulous especially when using it with a serum like Color Secret. Hair looks sleek and glossy.

I don’t own one but (hate to admit it as it costs so much!) I love the Dyson older version hairdryer as have borrowed my sisters one a few times. It does take longer than the Diva though.

My hairdresser recommends the Dyson Airwrap and her hair always looks amazing.

Coffeepot72 · 30/07/2022 12:08

I have the BBH and the Revlon One Step. They’re both excellent. I have a shoulder length bob with a few layers, i like this to look sleek with a hint of volume. The BBH can make me a little too bouffant if I’m not careful, necessitating a run through with the straighteners, by which time I’ve used 3 appliances to style my hair, which feels excessive. But the Revlon gives a sleeker finish, no straighteners required.

but when I had a shorter style, the BBH did a wonderful job with my layers, everything sat smoothly and in the right direction.
