Silk Fred - be careful!

I’ve been caught out by the returns on Silk Fred. They only allow 14 days for returns and they’re completely inflexible. I was 4 days outside and they wouldn’t help. I’m out approximately £500 for dresses that are honestly really poor quality for the price - think £85 for a dress that looks like you could buy it at a market stall.
it’s an unusually short return window, I’ve never ordered from a company that offered that short a time, so if you’re ordering for them it would be good to be aware.
For myself I wouldn’t touch them again with a bargepole.

House of Fraser policy is no refund if you change your mind about a purchase. Credit note only. Legal but unusual nowadays. And very annoying!

It’s not legal for online sales.

dementedpixie · 24/07/2022 15:41

Is it not the Sports Direct guy that bought HOF? It's the same T&Cs as SD but online orders can be returned as they are covered by distance selling regulations

PriamFarrl · 24/07/2022 15:41

Online orders with HoF are 28 days. As for returns in store no store has ever had to give you a refund because you change your mind.

@Bymyfingertips there's a group on Facebook called Prelovedsilkfred. If you list your items on there, they should get snapped up, I've sold a few bits on there. You won't get what you paid but you should be able to sell them for a reasonable amount. I got £30 for the last dress I sold.

@Inklingpot if you've never bought anything from them how can you say their clothing, customer service and returns are rubbish?!

SilkFred sell many brands and they aren't all rubbish (some might be poor quality)
The returns policy is straightforward, uncomplicated and clearly written on their website and the customer service (in my experience) has been excellent.

She says she doesn't buy from them *any more.

Unless you get ill, have a family emergency ,go away for work, go on holiday, can't get to the post office.

Really? You could say that about any return period or any 14 day grace period! Don’t be daft. Going on holiday and going away with work are absolutely shit examples, surely you’d know you’re going away and plan accordingly Hmm

dementedpixie · 24/07/2022 15:29

No they aren't
They specify 14 days to say you want to return and then 14 days to do the return

I’ve never let Next know I wanted to return, I’ve just always taken the goods back to store. The answer now is at 14 days tell the company you want to return all of the goods and then in the next 14 days take back what you actually don’t want. A bit of a faff, but you get 28 days but you mustn’t miss the first 14 day deadline.

It depends on the store. The 14 + 14 is the legal minimum.
Boden, for example offer 3 months.

Silk fred- totally stupid name as no silk anywhere!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/07/2022 16:54

If HoF is refusing returns for stuff bought online it’s breaking the law. You have 14 days to change your mind and are entitled to a full refund.

And agree that ordering a lot of stuff to try on us a normal business model. That’s why Klarna and others stepped in.

HoF is doing nothing of the sort. They have the usual legal returns for online purchases.

Startuplife · 24/07/2022 17:14

The problem with a lot of these shops is that the sizing is all over the place that you have to order a couple of sizes as you have no idea what will fit.

I bought quite a lot in Zara yesterday and some of the stuff that fits was either a small, medium or large! And then I stood in the returns queue for 45 minutes this afternoon. I know my own fault for not trying it on in store but have you seen the length of their changing rooms queue?! And of course there’s no service in there so I couldn’t download the app to book a slot.

I've never paid postage for any returns to SilkFred

@Judd my apologies, I missed that key info

I never buy anything from the likes of Shein, Zalando, Silk Fred, Light in the Box etc any more. Their clothes are really poor quality, customer service is non-existent and returns are a pain.

I find Zalando really good. I've only bought brand names I know but got them on sale and free returns.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/07/2022 18:14

I think Zalando is good too. It’s nothing like Light in the Box or Shein.

Mammyloveswine · 24/07/2022 18:28

There's a preloved Facebook page that I'd really good!

You'll make back a lot of what you spent! It's called preloved silk Fred

KavvLar · 24/07/2022 18:34

I have had some success with PayPal covering return postage in these cases, in case you paid by PayPal?

Next online orders are also 14 days return, even though the shops are 28 days - I only found this out this week too.

I have a next account . I've often returned things after a couple of months (I'm a bit disorganised) and I've always had refunds (credits). I have probably been paying interest in the meantime though .

lindyloo57 · 24/07/2022 23:22

I didn't know house of fraser do refunds if brought online, can you return online orders to a shop, or do it have to be posted back.

Bymyfingertips · 24/07/2022 23:46

Sorry many points so won’t quote previous posts. The law says tell the company you intend to return inside 14 days and then have another 14 days to return. That’s the bare minimum. Silk Fred, as is their right, stick rigidly to this. I have yet to find another online retailer who does this, I’m sure they exist. I told them at day 18 I wanted to return - still plenty of time to get the goods back before day 28 - but no dice. Next has been mentioned on the thread, they give credit notes, Silk Fred do not.
When I raised with them that the goods were effectively faulty due to the poor quality for the price Silk Fred stopped communicating with me.
Thanks for the info about the Facebook page, I’ll definitely look into that.
Some posters wondered about ordering so much but it was, as others have described, ordering 2 sizes of 4 dresses to try to get something for a event because I didn’t know what would fit. And then everything was pretty awful quality.

OP posts:
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/07/2022 09:58

If they goods were crap, then they were not if satisfactory quality, and you may be able to pursue it under the sale of goods act.

Bymyfingertips · 25/07/2022 10:27

I did quote that to them and that’s when they stopped communicating with me. I paid by credit card so I need to look into what to do next.
