Silk Fred - be careful!

I’ve been caught out by the returns on Silk Fred. They only allow 14 days for returns and they’re completely inflexible. I was 4 days outside and they wouldn’t help. I’m out approximately £500 for dresses that are honestly really poor quality for the price - think £85 for a dress that looks like you could buy it at a market stall.
it’s an unusually short return window, I’ve never ordered from a company that offered that short a time, so if you’re ordering for them it would be good to be aware.
For myself I wouldn’t touch them again with a bargepole.

OP posts:
Nofreshstarthere22 · 24/07/2022 14:19

Did you try and send it back? I find most places are flexible

PriamFarrl · 24/07/2022 14:28

By law they have to give you 14 days to say you don’t want it and then another 14 days to return it. That is plenty of time. If some kind of disaster befalls you that means you can’t make it to the post office inside 28 days then you have far more serious things to worry about.

But their policy isn't 28 days so I'm not sure what your point is?

We’ve done this to ourselves.. I have heard of too many people ordering £500 of clothing in various sizes and colours with the intention of keeping one item, then literally returning it all or most of it. How is a retailer meant to cover courier costs and keep stock levels up? I had the situation recently where I need one specific item in Hollister in one size only. It looked available but would go unavailable when I would be about to buy it; I finally got it when the returns came in. It’s hard to run a business when so much stock is out “on credit”.

The other problem is people wearing the item once with labels. I know someone like that who would never steal from a supermarket. But it’s different when it’s clothes apparently.

But that is pretty much the business model of these online retailers

They don't have physical stores to try on, and they save on these costs, so people have to order multiple items to find out what works. If you couldn't try on items no one would buy as the quality is so variable

Yes it is. 14 days to tell them you don’t want it, 14 more days to actually return

Policy doesn’t matter. The law is that you have 14 days to action a return and then another 14 days to do it in.

You have 28 days, you have to fill out an online form to say you want to return within 14 days but physically send the parcel within 28.

lindyloo57 · 24/07/2022 14:55

House of fraser do exchanges only since it was taken over, I've not brought anything from them since it changed hands.

That isn't what the OP said. They said 14 days return and they were inflexible.

They are going by the letter of the law. 14 days to say you don’t want it.

dementedpixie · 24/07/2022 15:03

Silkfred are also 14 days to say you want to return and then another 14 days to return

Silk Fred - be careful!
dementedpixie · 24/07/2022 15:05

I bought a skirt from them and it was very see through so it got returned

MistyRock · 24/07/2022 15:08

If I had ordered £500+ of clothes, I'd sure as hell make sure to read the returns policy pre and post purchase!

NormalForNuneaton · 24/07/2022 15:11

I'd never heard of them until I saw a woman on Facebook selling loads of their dresses.

I did wonder if she'd ordered loads of different sizes but then missed the returns deadline but , looking back at her listings, I don't think is the case.

MsSquiz · 24/07/2022 15:14

You have 14 days to go on the website and begin the returns process. After 14 days, the returns button disappears from the item so you are unable to return it.
If it is faulty, you can contact them and they will arrange the returns label to be emailed to you.

It's very straightforward and is easily available to read on the website.
I order often from SilkFred and have only been caught out with 1 item as I thought it had been delivered later than it had. Totally my fault and not their responsibility.

Maybe they're getting fed up of people ordering, wearing and returning? 2 weeks is more than enough time to try something on and decide if you want to keep it!

MsSquiz · 24/07/2022 15:17

Inklingpot · 24/07/2022 06:39

I never buy anything from the likes of Shein, Zalando, Silk Fred, Light in the Box etc any more. Their clothes are really poor quality, customer service is non-existent and returns are a pain.

@Inklingpot if you've never bought anything from them how can you say their clothing, customer service and returns are rubbish?!

SilkFred sell many brands and they aren't all rubbish (some might be poor quality)
The returns policy is straightforward, uncomplicated and clearly written on their website and the customer service (in my experience) has been excellent.

3luckystars · 24/07/2022 15:20

So there might be hope yet!!

Whataworldwelovei · 24/07/2022 15:22

I am sure I was told 28 days in next just the other day when I returned an item bought through my directory account, I need to watch out for this. I did a large order from shein recently, the return process was very good. Free return and credit to my account in less then a week. Where I live the shopping is crap as a lot of shops have closed, buying new clothes is turning in a difficult chore now.

dementedpixie · 24/07/2022 15:27

Next T&Cs also gives 14 days to notify of a return and then 14 days to return the item

dementedpixie · 24/07/2022 15:29

Rina66 · 24/07/2022 04:23

Next online orders are also 14 days return, even though the shops are 28 days - I only found this out this week too.

No they aren't
They specify 14 days to say you want to return and then 14 days to do the return

MrsDThomas · 24/07/2022 15:31

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor oh come on. Stop looking for excuses.

House of Fraser don’t offer returns at all now!! Only do returns if it’s faulty. Shocking.

They will take returns for an online order

yellowbananasinjuly · 24/07/2022 15:37

House of Fraser policy is no refund if you change your mind about a purchase. Credit note only. Legal but unusual nowadays. And very annoying!

This won't apply to online orders though; only for instore purchases
