My bikini looks like underwear

According to my husband…

I did a trial run of my holiday bikini in the paddling pool yesterday and my husband thought I was wearing underwear. It’s the top from the picture and bottoms in a very very similar fabric from M&S with a higher cut leg.

Surely my husband has just forgotten what a bikini looks like after two years of covid? Please reassure me that this is a good bikini, I was so happy to have put this together on my small boob / sturdy bottom half figure… I was expecting a compliment!

Maybe he only associates halter neck shapes with bikinis?
It’s absolutely fine OP. The real difference between underwear and bikinis is how the fabric behaves in the water! Yours will obviously be fine.

It's a bit ironic... seems like people think this bikini is like underwear because it's more functional, less decorative and better coverage than some other types of bikini.

It's actually much more appropriate for wearing alone and swimming/playing in than some so-called swimwear.

For those who suggest my husband wants to see me in something skimpier, he’s just not that guy. My other bikini is a board short and halter top combo in a black and white pattern (so there is some mix and match potential here too) and he was genuinely happy for me that I’d found something that I felt comfortable in. He also encourages me to wear a rash vest as I’m so pale.

I agree with those who says it’s practical, my kids aren’t confident swimmers yet and can still be quite grabby if they get scared. A triangle bikini won’t survive that. Plus my boobs aren’t big enough to give the triangles something to hold onto.

I think you have all provided me with enough reassurance that it’ll be ok. And now I think about it between the two bikinis and the option to mix and match I technically have four options. Plus I have the costume version in red 😎

I get where he’s coming from but I really like it.

It looks really nice and not like underwear at all. I think people usually associate more colour/ pattern and different cut with swimwear that’s why he’s said so. On the beach he wouldn’t question this at all, it would look differently as there would be a huge variety of swimwear.

I was expecting some kind of Ann Summers frilly lacey business, not this, this is absolutely a black bikini.

I can't quite put my finger on why but I agree it looks like underwear. But I wouldn't let that stop you wearing it. It's practical and presumably comfortable.

Those types of bikini tops seem to be the fashion right now, but I can see how he's confused.

It looks comfortable and practical, it’s nice. But does lean more towards underwear than bikini-wear. I think it’s the top style, along with the plainness of it IYKWIM.

I think it’s only occurred to him because you were in your own garden in a paddling pool and it wouldn’t be majorly weird to get in in your underwear. In the context of a beach, everyone will just think bikini (and would if it were actually underwear, too).

All bikinis look like underwear. I've been wearing a sports bra and running shorts in this heat. I'm aware that some of my neighbours probably think I'm wearing underwear, but I see lots of (hot country) runners going out in sports bras, so I'm going that way. Might cover up for the school run though. I'm comfortable with my middle aged, slightly saggy body, but others may not be.

Well he’s not lying, this looks pretty much like my daily underwear, plain black bra and plain black pants. It’s nice though, I really like it! Might get one for myself 😀
