90s/00s dress for 40th disco

I'm going to a 90s/00s themed 40th disco but I'm struggling to find a dress that a) looks nice and b)is obviously in the style of that time rather than just looking like I have odd dress sense....

Do you have any ideas? I've tried some cowl neck dresses which I used to wear clubbing all the time (at the time) but they look grim now.

I'm a tall size 12 if it makes any difference.

I’d go for a slip dress with a T-shirt underneath. Plus mini backpack.

Bringonsummer19 · 17/07/2022 21:43

You’ll need glitter in your face!!!!

MichelleScarn · 17/07/2022 21:45

That weird glittery almost swimsuit fabric for a dress like Whigfield?

MichelleScarn · 17/07/2022 21:47

Or Romy and Michelle

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 17/07/2022 21:58

Chain dress?

A Clueless inspired outfit?

yoshiblue · 17/07/2022 22:17

Have a look on HM and Monki, a lot of the dresses are 90s ATM

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/07/2022 22:18

Cowl neck

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/07/2022 22:19

Or the most iconic dress of that era - a union jack mini dress

ThickCutSteakChips · 17/07/2022 22:21

Chain mail backless dress, one shoulder dress, halterneck. Does it have to be a dress? You could do boot cut jeans or combat trousers with pointy high heels!

I’d go for a slip dress with a T-shirt underneath. Plus mini backpack.

And space buns, super thin rubber bangles in bright colours and those wedge slip on black shoes with no toes

ThickCutSteakChips · 17/07/2022 22:22

Or more 90s, a tartan dress or skirt.

GreenClock · 17/07/2022 22:28

Combats, trainers, Abercrombie vest top if you can find one on eBay. I remember All Saints wearing these in 2000ish.

Ginger Spice Union Jack dress…there are more.

My favourite 90s dress was bodycon and very short. Purple with a green star on the chest, worn with converse and a tiny backpack. I also loved a Little Miss Naughty cropped t-shirt with incredibly low slung bootcut jeans and converse again... Make sure you have a bottle of Smirnoff Ice in one hand and Heather Shimmer lipstick on 😊

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/07/2022 22:42

Go as a goth. Black dress, fishnets, backcomb your hair.

BeautifulWar · 17/07/2022 22:58

I also loved a Little Miss Naughty cropped t-shirt

I had this! Must have been 96ish, I think!

Yes - sounds right. Probably from Miss Selfridges 😊

Setyoufree · 18/07/2022 07:04

Thank you so much! I'd forgotten about the black rubber bracelets! I think you're right that if I accessorise it right it'll be more obvious what I'm doing.

I have the body glitter and heather shimmer lipstick sorted, just need the rest now....

Skirt over jeans

Slip dress with t shirt underneath & Blossom slouch hat

90s goth

CremeDeSudo · 18/07/2022 09:18

Shamelessly place marking as there's some fantastic ideas here and I've got a 90s festival themed 40th soon. I'm thinking 90s raver with face gems, bright UV colours, smileys. Definitely adding the rubber bands and tiny backpack!

Housewife2010 · 18/07/2022 10:25

I didn't wear any of these looks in the 90s. My favourite look was the Voyage inspired look of slip dresses with shrunken velvet trimmed cardis with big buttons. Very Jemima Khan.
