Hi, I've send threads on here which get great results so really hoping MNs can help.

I need a dress for a work style summer bbq event.

I'm 5ft nothing, total hour glass, size 12.

Large bust so hoping for V neck, sweetheart or square neckline. High neck makes me look frumpy.

All the midi dresses that are in swamp me and do me zero favours. I'm just drowning in material.

Looking for something casual, professional but fun.

Help

belted shirt dress?

BlackSwan · 12/07/2022 20:59

What's your budget? Do you like any particular colours?

Rina66 · 12/07/2022 21:22

Fit and flare dress? If you're 5ft, it'll suit your proportions.

Thanks. Budget is whatever it needs to be within reason. I don't mind paying extra if I'll get a lot of wear of out something and if it's timeless.

Tend to avoid shirt dresses due to buttons/bust.

I think the paisley dress would swamp me due to the lenght.

The army dress is nice but probably a bit too casual for what I'm looking for.

Colours wise, I'm very pale do stronger colours are better.

Most of my clothes are block colours or simple prints or patterns.
My style is probably mainstream (some would say boring but I'm ok with that). The exact opposite of quirky or centre of attention.

I used not to wear shirt dresses but since I have bought a packet of curved safety pins, I just use two (one on the bust, one the next button down) and then they are fine and don't gape.

I'm not much help though OP as I have been buying my clothes second hand off eBay this year as I'm struggling to find anything that suits.

I got quite a nice dress from Boden though (I'm 5' 4) and that site has various options on it that might suit.

Rina66 · 12/07/2022 21:28

What about wide leg crop trousers and a v neck camisole or a wide leg jump suit? These are all New Look...

Boden is my go to
Failing that M&S have done good dresses but you need to buy more than one size as sizing is all over the place in my recent experience

I’m 5ft too and recently went to a work do. I bought some absolutely beautiful black wide leg trousers from French connection at John Lewis. Amazing quality and perfect length. Paired with a sequin top but cami would work brilliant. Best I’ve bought in a long long time! Can’t help with dresses though, although I’ve had some success with hush summer dresses.

Neverhot · 12/07/2022 21:55

I'm 5ft, size 12 and have a big bust. These dresses tend to suit my shape. www.axparis.com/products/black-nude-abstract-print-wrap-midi-dress

That last dress is beautiful

I think a floaty v neck looks good on most shapes.

or a petite midi may not swamp you. I’m 5’4 and petite is too short for me in sainos so you might be ok.

there are other Ted Baker pieces that might interest you.
being short these short dresses might just hit at an appropriate leg length for you.

Have a look at the Next site (loads of different brands) but particularly in their Petite range (for 5'2" and below) :

I hate the way the model is posing but saw this dress on a friend recently at a summer party and it's lovely https://www.asos.com/asos-design/asos-design-cowl-neck-pencil-midi-dress-in-cream-floral-print/prd/201841513?clr=multi&colourWayId=201841523&SearchQuery=cowl+neck+pencil+midi

Rina66 · 13/07/2022 13:53

That’s a gorgeous dress @EllaPaella , not one for the faint hearted though - reminds me of the Karen Millen wriggle dresses I used to wear.

NighghtmareNeighbour · 13/07/2022 14:02

This is lovely, and although it buttons down the front, the gathered material gives plenty of room for a bigger bust (I say this as someone with ample cleavage and as an owner of this dress). There’s a shorter version, though it’s only available in beige).

gunnersgold · 13/07/2022 14:13

You need a fitted midi dress , I'm 5 foot and size 10 hourglass and they are very flattering! New look is great for them !

gunnersgold · 13/07/2022 14:15

This sort of style !

EllaPaella · 13/07/2022 20:21

Haha yes @Rina66 like the ones you would find in Kookai or Jane Norman! That type of ruching around the waist is surprisingly forgiving though.
