Found out this week I won an award at uni and the ceremony is on Monday. They've confirmed it's "formal" dress but I'm not a formal kind of person 😫

Initially was thinking something along these lines, but it's not going to cut it is it? Any of you wonderful people have suggestions for what I could wear instead?

Anyone??? Please?

Unless I just fake tan, do really nice make up and own that that's my style?

Are you a student? Then it's fine. If you're a member of staff, no.

ChagSameachDoreen · 10/07/2022 07:02

That's way too casual. How about a trouser suit and a very low heel, hair in a chignon?

Yes, sorry, should have said. I'm a student but old enough to be staff

My worry about a trouser suit is that it's unlikely to ever see the light of day again... and I'd spend although whole time pulling at it and feeling uncomfortable

If you are older then I would look for a smarter dress and shoes. Unis are pretty forgiving of 20 year olds who don't have formal clothes but if you older then you should make a better effort.

Congratulations on your award, that's a fantastic achievement.

In my experience of university formal occasions, there will be a wide range of clothing and you just need to wear something that you feel smart and comfortable in. The focus really should be on the academic achievement and not on what people are wearing. I don't think anyone would expect students (whatever their age!) to be in formal business suits, unless they want to be.

You look good - perhaps, if I was you, I would wear either some more conservative shoes, or maybe pair the chunky sandals with a plainer or less fitted dress? I'm not qualified to be the fashion police though, and if you feel most comfortable in that outfit then I think you should wear it.

I think you look absolutely fine. And I say that as somebody who has has been to a lot of these type of events at a redbrick university through work.

Congratulations!

As long as your top doesn't flash boob then I'd say wear it. Don't waste money, be comfortable. I say this as uni staff.

tinselvestsparklepants · 10/07/2022 18:58

Also you will spend most of the night day at a table probably so worrying about footwear is pointless!

tinselvestsparklepants · 10/07/2022 18:58

Sat at a table.

Your outfit would be fine at the uni I work at. Congrats!
