New photo or not?

I feel like my passport photo is so bad I hardly recognise myself. DH reassuringly (?!😂) says it does look like me, although it's not very flattering! Now it's nearly time to renew my Driving License photo so do I take the easy route and do it online or do I go to the faff of getting a new photo? Is it likely that a photo of me would really be so bad people wouldn't recognise me from it?

Does it actually matter?? My driving license and passport photos are dire but who cares!

MsDastardley · 08/07/2022 16:27

Mine is shocking. The allegedly tough New York immigration control had a right laugh at mine and commiserated me on a bad photo.

@OldTinHat, that's reassuring. I think it's just because it's not how I see myself. Maybe I've the opposite of dysmorphia!😂

@MsDastardley, thanks, that does make me feel better. 😁

They're only looked at for a second. Your beautiful face is loved for longer.

goodgoodday · 08/07/2022 17:10

Indeed!😁

I always hope they'll stop saying, "this washed-out charmer can't possibly me you, madam, I think you have the wrong passport" but it hasn't happened yet.

I think part of it is that I'm used to seeing myself in glasses. Photos without them on always look strange to me. But it's a right pain to get them taken without looking cross eyed trying to focus on the camera lens. It takes long enough never mind trying to get it to look good.

I just renewed my Irish driving licence. I had my new photo ready to upload but there wasn't an option to do it. Back came my new licence with the photo from ten years ago. So I look ten years younger on it Grin

It's like that's what I'm expecting! 😂 But so much I dread it!

@DramaAlpaca, strangely in my head I actually look more like the (3 decades) old pictures! The old photo booths with actual film in them took much better pictures IMO.

My old passport photo was so unbelievably horrific I looked like a serial killer. I was always kind of insulted they just used to let me through passport control based on it tbh.

goodgoodday · 08/07/2022 17:21

I just look really ill with massive shadows under my eyes in mine.

If something happened to you like you went missing or something, would you want them to show it on News at Ten?

goodgoodday · 09/07/2022 08:34

I think if something happened that would be the priority but I think they often show more casual snapshot pictures anyway.

It's really hard to take a good passport photo as you have to stare stony faced into the camera. I've lived in London all my life so well used to doing that but this takes it to extremes. I would not want to encounter me on a dark night.

I prefer the black and white one in my new passport. I also reckon it'll look even worse in another ten years!

KirstenBlest · 09/07/2022 12:16

I wouldn't count on it.

You can counter dark shadows by using a mirror (e.g. on a desk horizontal at chest level) to throw light back on to your face
