Beauty products - flight liquid allowance help!

Normally I check in my bag as I have all my various hair/skin and make up products. I don’t wear huge amounts but I like to use a few different things and hate not having my best stuff with me on holiday.

I also wear contact lenses so have those plus eye drops.

How can I fit everything into a tiny plastic bag for security? How do others do it? I’m flying with friends who aren’t checking their luggage in and so it’s a pain if I do. It’s only for 2 nights in a European city…

Any tips? Thanks.

You'll have to downsize your items. Can you decant some into smaller pots? Use travel sized products too

hugeandembarrassed · 05/07/2022 22:45

I decant, buy travel sizes, use samples/sachets.
Or you could order usual sizes to collect at boots on airside at the airport (but won't be able to bring them back).

redwaterbottle · 05/07/2022 22:46

Decant and then buy cheap things after security (toothpaste, deodorant etc). Lipsticks, eyeshadows and pastes don't count as liquids.

dementedpixie · 05/07/2022 22:50

Pastes do count as liquids e.g toothpaste

BarbaraofSeville · 06/07/2022 07:20

Remember that if you buy after security, you can't bring it back with you.

Can you share any products, eg things like toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, face wash, shower gel, hair spray etc? If you're only going for a couple of days, you don't all need 100 ml of these items, so just taking one of each between you will leave more room for more personal items like make up?

BarbaraofSeville · 06/07/2022 07:23

For longer trips I'd suggest getting a hold case between you to overcome this problem, but with the current airport issues, avoid it if you can.

We could have managed with hand luggage only on a recent trip but decided to check a bag as we couldn't be arsed being careful with products etc and it bit us on the arse on the way back slightly as we waited nearly 90 mins for the hold bag to appear on the carousel.

RampantIvy · 06/07/2022 07:23

You won't need large amounts of you are only away for a couple of nights. Just decent into smaller containers.

Thanks! Is there any leeway with size of bag of liquids you can take on?

Decant the stuff you really need into travel size bottles/pots... so your contact lens solution/ face cream. Don't forget things like mascara and lip gloss count as liquids so you need space in the clear bags for them.

Once you've gone through security there will be a boots or something similar amongst the airport shops. Buy a small cheap shower gel/ shampoo/ toothpaste/sun cream from there to share between two of you... as bought after security gates they don't need to fit in the clear plastic bag. Use these on the holiday and them bin them before you fly back.

No. When I went a few weeks ago it was one clear bag that must seal at top and think it was 20cm x 20cm in size

Not in my experience. Naïvely, I grabbed a freezer bag from home once and put my liquids in there, thinking it would save precious seconds at security. My bag got pulled for extra checking, they pulled everything out of the freezer bag and made sure it all fit in one of their own security bags.

Not in most airports.

I've heard of newer scanners at airports where they don't have limits on liquids, but I'm not come across them myself.

What brands are we talking about?

It has to be clear, resealable and max size 20x20cm

Just how much stuff are you taking? It's only 2 nights.

All the clear bags I have seen at airports have been about 8 or 9 inches by 8 or 9 inches. Maximum liquid allowance is 10 x 100ml I think, but I'm happy to be corrected.

OutDamnedSpot · 06/07/2022 07:39

Do any of your friends use less make up than you? They might be willing to take a few things in their bags?

doadeer · 06/07/2022 07:41

I decant into small clear bottles from Amazon. How much stuff you do need for 2 nights?

manlyago · 06/07/2022 07:45

Thanjs everyone!

Answering your question @RampantIvy , I have contact lenses so that’s 3 pairs plus specialist eye drops before I’ve even begun. Shampoo, conditioner, hair styling stuff. Skin care (cleanser, serum, moisturiser) and make up (foundation, lip balm, mascara) I don’t wear a lot of makeup but I wash my hair everyday and it’s dyed so needs decent hair care. I also have sensitive skin so would rather take my own stuff.

Sample sachets is a good idea. I have lots of those. I’ll maybe buy one if those decanting travel bottle sets. Such a faff though!

decant the stuff you can't get in travel sizes.
buy travel size of things you can't decant airside.

btw I have seen lipsticks counted as liquid at some security checks...

Iheartmysmart · 06/07/2022 07:47

When I went away earlier in the year I took solid shampoo, conditioner and deodorant. Olay do cleansing cloths with face wash already in them. Decanted my foundation and primer into a contact lens case which was more than enough for a few days. Took a makeup palette which included lipstick. All I took in my clear bag was mascara, toothpaste, moisturiser and a tiny sample of perfume.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 06/07/2022 07:48

There is no flexibility on bag size and it's one per person. They will ask you to throw away items over the limit so you need to think about what is essential and only take that. Remove anything boxed from the box to save space. Buy travel sized items for decent into smaller tubs or bottles. See what you could manage without for a day or two. Switch to alternatives e.g . I don't normally remove make up with wipes but I might just take a packet of wipes rather than a liquid remover in your situation. It should be easily doable for your duration of trip.

manlyago · 06/07/2022 07:49

I can buy shower gel, toothpaste, body lotion, cleanser at the airport. Not precious about them. I just wondered how others who like a lot of products mange?

It’s a choice isn’t it? Check in a bag and take everything you want to, or use hand luggage and be ruthless about what you take?

manlyago · 06/07/2022 07:52

brilliant thank you @greenacrylicpaint @Iheartmysmart @CeeceeBloomingdale

Lipsticks, mascara etc do count as your allowance. Everything must go in the clear plastic bag.

manlyago · 06/07/2022 07:57

I already have solid deodorant and I previously bought a travel like this to try (also includes shampoo and a moisturising body bar)
www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/product/ethique-the-guardian-solid-conditioner-mini-60039399?skuid=039399

Would these count as liquids? Given they’re solid liquids like lipstick in a way?
