Beauty products - flight liquid allowance help!

Normally I check in my bag as I have all my various hair/skin and make up products. I don’t wear huge amounts but I like to use a few different things and hate not having my best stuff with me on holiday.

I also wear contact lenses so have those plus eye drops.

How can I fit everything into a tiny plastic bag for security? How do others do it? I’m flying with friends who aren’t checking their luggage in and so it’s a pain if I do. It’s only for 2 nights in a European city…

Any tips? Thanks.

I just wondered how others who like a lot of products mange?

I’m just super-brutal about what I take. I fly a lot so have it down to a fine art. I don’t even take hold luggage any more now.

Solid shampoo bars and soap don't count - they don't spread or smear (pour, spray, spread or smear is a good guide by the way). Foundation, serum and moisturiser can go in tiny pots, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion into small bottles. Buy a travel size toothpaste and deodorant from Boots. You'll be surprised what you can fit in the bag if you decant everything. I use the tiny pots from a set like this

withiceplease · 06/07/2022 08:19

I was specifically told by the chap herding us through the queues that lipsticks do not count when I was faffing with my bag

dementedpixie · 06/07/2022 08:19

You can buy travel shampoo/conditioner/toothpaste/hairspray. Use face wipes instead of cleanser. Bar soaps and solid deodorant arent counted as liquids.

Decant and then buy cheap things after security (toothpaste, deodorant etc). Lipsticks, eyeshadows and pastes don't count as liquids.

Actually some airports DO count them as liquids. Individual airports have inconsistent rules, so either check ahead or assume they are liquids. Otherwise your very nice expensive lipstick could end up in the airport bin.

There was a detailed thread about this very recently. I’m rushing to work so can’t look for it right now, but it was only a few days ago.

Depends on the airport. They most definitely count at London City.

withiceplease · 06/07/2022 08:38

How ridiculous having different rules at different airports! At least I'm forewarned now. Thank you

NightmareSlashDelightful · 06/07/2022 08:41

London airports generally seem stricter on this, although I’d say that Edinburgh has also tightened up recently. (In general I’ve found Edinburgh to be an extremely well-run airport.)

US airports are something else entirely. They tend to be that odd combination of chaotic and incredibly strict on liquids at security.

I decant, buy travel sizes, use samples/sachets.
Or you could order usual sizes to collect at boots on airside at the airport (but won't be able to bring them back).

Yes to both of these. I'm generally low maintenance, beauty wise but for some unknown reason when I get it all together for hand luggage only I'm like a walking Boots store Confused I think it's the size of packaging,

A combination of these means I fit all of our bits (family of 3) into x 1 bag each so we're sorted. Exception being sun cream which I click and collect after security.

RampantIvy · 06/07/2022 08:53

As an ex contact lens wearer I do get the need for the eye drops and contact lens stuff. TBH I tend to bother less with make up on holiday, and just wear lipstick. I use facial cleansing bars instead of cleanser.

manlyago · 06/07/2022 07:31

Thanks! Is there any leeway with size of bag of liquids you can take on?

Not sure but I find carefully packing the bag with sachets at the back, small bottles next then little pots in the gap helps. Also means they sit flatter in your carry on, seal properly and you can see at a glance what's in each.

Can you tell I'm anal about these things? Grin

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 06/07/2022 08:56

Oh and don't forget a canvas bag folded in your carry on for your post security purchases . Handy for packing smalls in on your way home too

Thanjs everyone!

Answering your question @RampantIvy , I have contact lenses so that’s 3 pairs plus specialist eye drops before I’ve even begun. Shampoo, conditioner, hair styling stuff. Skin care (cleanser, serum, moisturiser) and make up (foundation, lip balm, mascara) I don’t wear a lot of makeup but I wash my hair everyday and it’s dyed so needs decent hair care. I also have sensitive skin so would rather take my own stuff.

Sample sachets is a good idea. I have lots of those. I’ll maybe buy one if those decanting travel bottle sets. Such a faff though!

Look fantastic used to do a good sample thing, was something like x5 items for £4, free delivery and you got the money back on your account as a credit.

Normally I abhor that kind of thing on a planet/carbon footprint stance but it's a tiny concession I make every few years Confused

violetbunny · 06/07/2022 09:48

Switch to solid products where you can - bars of soap, shampoo bars, compact powder foundation, etc.

TopSec · 06/07/2022 10:36

I am like you Manlyago - I have to take just about everything on my holidays :) I do travel a fair bit, but as everyone else has said, decant everything into small pots - you are only going for 2 days so even I could get shampoo and conditioner for 2 days in a small pot. Last time I went on a weekend break, I bought sachets of shampoos and conditioners (I got mine from Amazon but I believe brands like Aussie Miracle do these). Yes still a liquid and has to be put into the plastic bag, but takes up very little space as you will only need 2 of each. I also have to wash my hair everyday and it is also coloured but 2 days without my favourite brand does no harm at all. I also buy deodorant wipes, so not liquid. The small deodorant sprays, small toothpastes etc that you can buy in places like boots and some budget shops like Savers etc take up very little space and will definitely last for a 2 day break. Go and enjoy yourself and don't worry too much - 2 days without favourite brands will do no harm at all (unless specific sensitive brands are required)

CeeceeBloomingdale · 06/07/2022 10:47

Just thought of another tip, take multi tasking products. Rather than take a separate blush I’d use my lipstick as a cream blush. Mix a bit of brown/pale eye shadow with moisturiser as a cream bronzer or highlighter.

withiceplease · 06/07/2022 08:19

I had a lip balm pulled out of my bag, I didn't think I had any liquids at all and they picked it up on the scanner in my bag and I had to put it in the liquids bag (which I didn't have because I didn't have any liquids....).

KatharinaRosalie · 06/07/2022 13:18

I collect samples of everything and use those for travelling, usually plenty for a couple of nights. I also never bother to put really tiny amounts like mascaras or contact lenses in the bag, never had issues and I travel a lot.
Solid shampoo or deodorant also does not count as liquid.

shivermetimbers77 · 06/07/2022 13:27

I take a few basics in small 100ml bottles in my carry on bag and buy anything else I may need from Boots in duty free as there is no size limit after you are through security.

EveParker22 · 11/07/2022 15:48

SPF essential!! I used to use a Dermalogica Primer but it got a tad expensive.
I now just pop on a Garnier SPF 50 spray which also helps set my make-up

La-Roche Posay also do a lot of 50ml travel size kits (if that helps)

grownup2 · 11/07/2022 16:27

The contact lens case tip for products you need v. little of is a good one. Any lens wearer collects loads of them and they seal tightly. Film cases used to be good for slightly larger product amounts, but hard to find now. Many bottles you can buy for travel are vulnerable to leaking (less so if you squeeze a bit of air out before closing. But has anyone cracked how to label or mark containers indelibly so you remember what's in them?

gogohmm · 11/07/2022 16:33

Take less, I take a roll on deodorant, 30ml perfume, i lip colour, i lip balm, small palate, mascara, brow pencil, eye liner, moisturiser, sunscreen and it all fits. I sometimes take foundation too but that's a mini size one

gogohmm · 11/07/2022 16:34

I use the shampoo etc at the hotel

gogohmm · 11/07/2022 16:35

@NightmareSlashDelightful

Jkf no longer requires liquids to be separated!
