What style jeans?

I'm trying to revamp my wardrobe and have realised I have no jeans I really love at the moment so looking for some recommendations for a couple of new pairs. I used to live in skinny's, tried to them go to the bigger baggy style but just not sure I'm fully pulling off that style at 41. Plus they are really hard to dress up if going out for the evening.
I'm 5ft 7, generally pretty slim, a size 10 but with wider hips.
What style jeans will look current and up to date, without making me look like a 41 year old trying to dress like her teenage daughter 🤣?

I've seen some nice bootcut ones - a bit more like skinny flares. I like indigo ones from Oasis.

Yodaisawally · 02/07/2022 21:57

M and s Harper cigarette jeans are my fave at the moment

milkysmum · 02/07/2022 22:10

I'm still drawn back to skinny's like these that I've just seen from Next. Do they scream dated? I still see loads of people in skinny's, but then I read on other threads that skinny's are done with. For what it's worth I live in the north of England in a small village- we are not exactly at the front of fashion!!

@milkysmum skinny jeans are still the predominant style in a lot of shops including Next so lots of people still wearing them. Including me! I think in the winter with boots they are still the best option but for going out maybe try something new?

There is a great account on tiktok if you're on it where a midsize middle aged women tries on loads of jeans (amongst other posts). Will try and work out how to share it!

vm.tiktok.com/ZMNSe1HnC/?k=1 - here you go. I think she's looking at jeans for taller women this time 😀

milkysmum · 03/07/2022 09:40

Thank you that's great.

Would be good to know if you manage to find a pair you like - I love my bootcut ones but I've got bigger round the waist and they know longer fit comfortably so I need to go shopping again

EllaPaella · 03/07/2022 11:21

I live in jeans and have so many different styles but my two favourite pairs are my M&S harper jeans (i roll them up a bit) and my straight leg cropped Levi's.

EllaPaella · 03/07/2022 11:23

Skinny jeans are fine - I tend not to wear them so much in summer but wear them loads in winter with my DM's. No other jeans go as well with chunky boots imo.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/07/2022 21:52

I tried some straights and they looked really awful. After years of skinny jeans I think I'm still not ready for straight or mum jeans like the youngsters are wearing.
What does seem OK for me is either slim jeans or girlfriend style in a size down. Not very easy to find though. The shops seems to be full of either skinnies or wide legged/bootcuts. Bootcuts suit me in theory, but need to be paired with heels I think and I'm not quite ready to go back to what I wore all the time ten years ago.

OnenessWithAllStrife · 10/07/2022 03:33

For me, personally, at 48, all styles are doable. Just because a few teens are opting for wide leg, doesn't rule them out for anyone else. I don't care a toss what people half my age are wearing.

I like skinny or very slim in winter, and looser, boyfriend or wide for summer. I have a great new pair of pale denim low rise wide legs from H&M and look great in them. If you want to dress them up then you choose a more fitted top. All styles are available now, so this means all styles are on trend. The only difference now is there are additions to skinny, not that skinny are dated. They just aren't. The only thing that defines the best jeans is our body shape.
Snap up all that you like, and make the most of it, because for the past 20 yrs only one style has been in the shops, it is now time to enjoy having choice and variety, and get stuck in as you only live once!

And there has never, ever been a jeans leg that correlates with age. Never. There is no such thing as a young or old pair of jeans. They're universal at this point!

I think it takes some adjustment to wear non skinny jeans after wearing them for years, other styles feel like they have too much fabric and make you look bigger (the same way it took people a while to come round to skinny jeans). They don’t and it also hasn’t really anything to do with age. But I also think nothing will ever beat them for versatility and practicality especially in colder weather.

I have the Next slim fit jeans and some straight ones from Esprit which I’ve had slightly cropped. The more I wear them, the more I get used to them. I think they look better with sandals and other summer shoes, feel like I’ll go back to skinnies come autumn when I don’t want fabric flapping round my ankles and letting drafts in, and cropped with boots looks stupid on me. But I’ll keep an open mind to see how they might be styled.

I really suit skinny jeans, my bottom half is my slimmest and they are a great way to show off my legs without actually getting them out but they don’t suit everyone so it’s great people can choose from all different styles now.

I think the only thing that is 'dated' in fashion right now is the belief that things look 'dated' attitude.

I'm nearly 60, absolutly love clothes/fashion/dressing to suit myself. I have jeans of every style, any shape is fine, atm I am loving my flares, they look great on my skinny legs, look lovely with my sandle collection Blush Having been caught out in the rain wearing them I will be back in skinnies come autumn, or possibly my mom/boyfriend ones, which ever take my fancy.

I find it is usually young women who have the 'is it dated' worry, at my age I don't give rats arse, I have my style now and I love it, Its very freeing.

Leftbutcameback · 10/07/2022 10:44

The biggest issue I have is the rise - I find high rise unflattering (short torso) and it often trigger my IBS. I don't want to look like Christina or Britney style low rise but something in the middle would be good!

My Oasis jeans which I love are mid rise but from a few years ago.

SloppyHousekeeper · 10/07/2022 12:34

I am wearing wide leg and boot cut and also cropped from fat face at the moment. Not sure what I will wear in the autumn/winter. The wide leg jeans I have are not very wide so will probably look good with some chunky shoes or boots. It is really hard adjusting. I feel that I don't look good in skinny jeans any more but struggling to settle on a style.

lindyloo57 · 10/07/2022 18:01

I too can't wear high rise, was in m&s and every pair seems to be high rise, except the slim lily's which I have three pair of, but would love a new style, I did manage to buy from ebay, oasis bootcut jeans which were my favourite jeans the scarlets, back in the day, they fit like a glove with a mid rise, I haven't brought new jeans from oasis since the shops all closed, do anyone know if they still do mid rise jeans.

Leftbutcameback · 10/07/2022 18:28

@lindyloo57 my favourites are Scarlets too! So flattering. The last pair I bought was a few years ago online and they fit perfectly when they arrived. A bit less so now 😒

lindyloo57 · 10/07/2022 18:36

@Leftbutcameback I did have to go up a size, from the size 8 I used to be, to a size 10, they are still a little tight, but when I brought the size 12 on ebay they were too big.

pepperaunt · 10/07/2022 18:42

My teenaged DD and her friends are all wearing ripped mum jeans, which look horrible on actual mums! I’m still wearing my skinnies, but find they’re starting to look a bit “wrong”. I have a couple of pairs of straight legs, and hope bootcut jeans come back in again!

Coveredinivy · 10/07/2022 19:10

My absolute favourite jeans are the M&S Boyfriend. They're straight but kind of baggy. I wear them rolled up with sandals or trainers. I also got some lovely wide leg ones from Primark which are great.

Leftbutcameback · 10/07/2022 19:17

@lindyloo57 I'll have a look out and if there's a cheapish pair on eBay or vinted might be worth the risk on sizing (which I'm sure has changed)
