What's on trend now?

Given this thread describes my wardrobe

What now looks dated http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/styleandd_beauty/4579901-what-now-looks-dated

Can people tell me what's on trend?

Don't worry what's on trend and go off what suits you. Low rise jeans are on trend at the mo, but high waisted jeans suit me so that's what I go for. It's about knowing your body shape and what styles/colours suit you/what colours go together. That kind of thing.

April90 · 30/06/2022 15:10

Also people saying heels are out of fashion is crap. Just some heels look good and some don't 😂

Notonthestairs · 30/06/2022 15:17

Here for the tips!

FortonServices · 30/06/2022 15:22

I've gone off cardigans.

What to wear to keep warm though. I love my plain black biker jacket. It's really simple, about 6 years old and bought in Ibiza.

If I'm wearing jeans and trainers or leisure wear, I'd go for a hoodie but I have no idea what to wear over dresses / something smarter if it's not my leather biker.

Help!

darisdet · 30/06/2022 15:27

My guesses. Disclaimer* may be right or wrong!

Hair wavy or curly

Those thick-soled sandals

Large brown-tinted sunglasses

Mrcpy · 30/06/2022 15:28

I just listened to a podcast talking about how tends don’t really exist any more. Social media is full of micro-trends and everyone’s doing different things. So wear whatever you enjoy from whatever era. If what you like is “out of style” then just wear it and bring it back.

ClaudineClare · 30/06/2022 15:28

According to Vogue, biker jackets are back in @FortonServices despite what was said on the other thread.

@FortonServices In the winter a smarter midi boucle coat/jacket with a tie belt would be nice. In the summer I tend not to wear jackets over dresses for special ocassions. Day to day I just throw a washed black denim jacket on. It's a bit like a bum freezer so a tiny bit cropped. I still wear cardigans as well. Couldn't care less what's in fashion.

Sheffieldissunny · 30/06/2022 15:31

Yeah I am definitely seeing a lot of biker jackets at the moment

April90 · 30/06/2022 15:32

Don't know why I said midi there. I should of said knee length or above

I love my biker jacket but the last time I went 'out' (which was Boxing Day), all the young 'uns were wearing those oversized dad blazers, either with a tiny cropped top and skin tight leggings or baggy jeans. I'm far too old for that look though.

(Love your username, btw. I was there the other day).

allfurcoatnoknickers · 30/06/2022 15:42

Ooh, I came from the other thread because I am avid people watcher (it's sort of part of my job) and live for this kind of stuff. Anyway, I as mentioned over there, I live in a very fashion-y part of NYC and trends I've noticed are:

  • Co-ords
  • Dressing like you're in Little House on the Prairie. The Nap Dress juggernaut cannot be stopped
  • Dressing like Princess Di in the 1990s/like the girls in Friends
  • Dressing like you fell out of 1982/the Rowing Blazers modern prep look
  • Dressing like you fell off the bar in Coyote Ugly (for those who missed it the first time round)
  • Whatever Gucci is doing right now
  • Chunky shoes/sandals are v.v.v in, which I love.
So basically @Mrcpy is right and it's a bunch of micro trends and you can do whatever the hell you like.
FortonServices · 30/06/2022 15:58

@allfurcoatnoknickers

Never heard of a nap dress but I like some of those. Are they decent quality? Never heard of the brand but wondering about ordering one.

ClaudineClare · 30/06/2022 16:03

@allfurcoatnoknickers is that mostly younger people? What do older people wear (50+), or are they banned? 😃

I love NYC, very envious that you live there.

Sallypally0 · 30/06/2022 16:06

Inflatable gimp suits are all the rage.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 30/06/2022 16:19

@FortonServices Nice quality, but they're not lined if that's a deal breaker for you. I've got a nap dress and the Zara knockoff, and there's no comparison quality wise - the Zara version weighs about half as much and feels flimsy.

@ClaudineClare Older people are absolutely doing the first 3 and the chunky shoes. My mentor is 49 and she wears a lot of Hill House at the weekends. She also likes Cos and Eileen Fisher. I actually think that the over 50s here tend to be much more "individual". I was at a meeting a few weeks back with a 60 year old who was wearing a beige linen shift, flat loafers, a Hermes Scarf, a fuck off massive Birkin and was also rocking an undercut.

That’s awesome! I’ve been on Pinterest quite a bit to try and pick up style tips, but my take-home message is certainly that you can wear whatever you want these days! Look confident and people will think you’re deliberately following a trend.

I'm gutted I didn't keep mine from many years ago

OP posts:
BingoBungle · 30/06/2022 21:05

Satin dresses
Hemlines that hit halfway between the base of your calf and your ankle - I believe this is called Midaxi
Big soles on your shoes
Caroline Ingalls blouses
Straight jeans all one colour without rips or whiskering, turned up at the ankles
Cargo pants are back but they look different to the ones from our youth because they’re narrow and sometimes cuffed at the ankle
Flared indigo jeans worn with a kitten heel and a chiffon blouse - very Tom Ford in his 90s prime

I love fashion but don’t participate as I’m too chubby and too frugal.

riesenrad · 30/06/2022 21:06

That makes sense to me. I said on the other thread that people listen to music from all eras now so why not wear clothes from all eras too.

FortonServices · 30/06/2022 21:27

I love my Ibiza biker. It reminds me of my carefree days 😄

BigSkies2022 · 30/06/2022 21:37

Like the sound of this, except the kitten heel. I'd be doing this with a platform or a chunky sole, sorry Tom, I need the comfort and stability these days.

Those Nap dresses look a nightmare. And when I say, 'Mutton,' I"m not being ageist, because I think anyone over 5 will struggle to look nice in these.

Eaglesqueak · 30/06/2022 22:47

allfurcoatandnoknickers, looking at those sandals reminds me of my granny. She was obviously well ahead of the times - she died in 1995!
i swear that if we didn’t keep moving countries I’d keep all my wardrobe from forever - what comes around, goes around!

Ilikecheeseontoast · 30/06/2022 22:55

I’ve been noticing g big ugly sandals or big ugly trainers worn with pretty dresses or cropped baggy jeans also Coords, like the ones in Zara at the moment.

blugray · 30/06/2022 23:21

I’m speaking from a 24 year old perspective but I think this is the first time I’ve seen fashion come full circle.

Skinny is in, no one cares about big bums any more. Having a flat stomach and tiny waist is in, and anything that flaunts that is in.

Fashion is overall casual. Bottoms are loose, eg straight leg jeans, cargo trousers, joggers etc. However NOT cuffed bottoms - just fitted at the waist and loose/wide elsewhere. Turned up hems are not in either.

Tops tend to be tight, crop tops and sleeveless in particular. I’ve seen those waistcoat tops everywhere. Again, maximum expose of the stomach area.

Trainers are in, sandals are in and heels are actually in. It obviously depends on the kind of heel and the occasion but they are still fashionable - they just aren’t the heels of the 2000s or the 2010s. Eg the lace up sandals are everywhere. I think heeled boots look super outdated though.
