Shrinking clothes on purpose, how do I do it?

I have just bought a lovely soft cotton shirt that I love - been lusting over it for months and finally found it half price! Problem is, size is too big and a smaller one isn't available anymore. I'd like to keep it but look for ways to shrink it slightly (like a size smaller really), is there a way I can do this in the washing machine?
Don't want to ruin it!

Depends what the fabric is - what's it made of?
