Growing out a pixie cut?

A year or so ago I had my hair cut short, I had been unwell and my hair was just snapping off so I went for a pixie cut. I do love having short hair but it doesn’t make me look very feminine (probably because I don’t wear make up or have my brows done). I’m thinking of attempting to grow my hair again but my hair is already looking awful after a couple months without a cut. Is there a way of growing it out without it looking awful for the next 6+ months?

Don't torture self with weird hair for a year. Just do it gradually by telling the hairdresser you're growing it so you just want a tidy up.

I grew my pixie cut out to a Louise Brooks type bob. I had it cut every six weeks to let the top and sides grow down but avoid an annoying mullet situation. My hairdresser was clear what I wanted and how to get there - I wouldn’t have managed six months of looking like a shaggy mess, this way I kept a style throughout the process.
