Small, year round capsule wardrobe?

BelindaTheChicken · 25/06/2022 09:43

What is in yours?

My body has changed shape a lot lately and I also have been having some health problems which mean comfort is key!

I've reduced my shoe collection down to about two pairs as well, due to my feet being a mess as well - can't wear any of my pretty shoes anymore 😫

Anyway, this may all be temporary, so I'm not buying loads of clothes, so just need a small capsule to get me through the next year or two.

I can't wear jeans or anything remotely tight on my bottom half, so floaty skirts and dresses will definitely feature heavily.

Any ideas?

The shoes I can still wear are tan leather work shoe things and red canvas trainers. I also want to buy something like boots or walking trainers with orthopedic support in white or maybe black...

Check out instagram.com/johnlewis_emily?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= who has done combination/capsule posts.

Birkenstock has a Chelsea boot that I’ve had my eye on for a while but there £150+

Dresses are just skirts when you put a jumper over them. Good for when you don’t want anything around your waist.

My friend had a great very small basic capsule wardrobe when she was pregnant. It was all stretchy and all navy based and it actually came all as one package (can't remember shop)
It was roughly : long Jersey skirt, boat neck stripy top, stripy long tunic top, plain boat neck top, stretchy wide leg trousers, leggings, shorter Jersey tube skirt, oversized soft denim shirt.
I think there was maybe also a basic vest and a basic tee. It was all v comfy and she actually wore it long after baby was born too.
Something like this might help?
I think you could also get a really nice sweatshirt type warmer top or some Jersey dungarees or jumpsuit as they are very comfy round the middle

crochetmonkey74 · 25/06/2022 09:55

If you pick your colours carefully , you could probably pick stuff that all went together even if it was from different shops

Mrcpy · 25/06/2022 09:56

My body shape changes a bit (fluctuates between sizes 10-14, currently 12) and what I’ve found that works is simple black dresses. So I have a few of those in linen and cotton. They tend to be loose and comfortable shapes and I wear them with a belt and jacket/cardigan depending on formality. Shoes are black/navy/beige.

I liven things up with jewellery, scarves and bags - I’m happy to invest in these, and that works well because the same items can be worn with any body shape.

Oh fantastic tips! Thank you.

I'll check out that Instagram account as well

It can look more varied if you add a more coloured top or two. Or cardigan. Nobody notices the bottoms much.

BelindaTheChicken · 25/06/2022 12:06

Thanks again.

I think I'm going to aim for a small colour palette (based around my shoes tbh as they are non negotiable).

Also will look into that maternity wear pack thing. I'm not above wearing maternity clothes if they fit 😁

I am going through the same thing and only have one pair of shoes (Vionic sandals), I feel your pan.

BelindaTheChicken · 25/06/2022 12:34

Hi @OompaLoompaa

Yes! My two remaining, wearable shoes are vionics as well!

I've just ordered some slippers from there too.

Just going through my wardrobe and so little of it fits 🤨.

Going to come up with a proper plan this week. I've settled on a colour palette of navy, cream, blush pink and camel with coral red accents (because my trainers are coral red and I'm not getting rid of them).

BelindaTheChicken · 25/06/2022 13:11

My only sandals are Tevas. I haven't worn them for ages, so I don't know if they are going to be OK for my stupid feet 😒. Fingers crossed. Otherwise Vionic might be getting another order from me 😫

Black midi dress in modal, it's stretchy and breathable. It can be dressed up with a blazer or dressed down with a linen shirt. And of course accessories: bags, hats scarves & jewellery.

BelindaTheChicken · 25/06/2022 13:26

Thanks, I'm going to have a hunt for modal dresses. Sounds ideal

I looove my summer wardrobe and never liked winter clothes 🤷🏻‍♀️

So I've decided to get fancy cardigans and v necked sweaters so I still wear all of my summer tops underneath 😉

Love this colour pallette it will be so nice!

I went down the capsule, wardrobe route in January. I did a bit of reading up on it and settled on what I think is called the 333 method. You are allowed 33 items and they are reviewed seasonally, so every three months. The items cover everything - coats, shoes, handbags etc.

It has been a complete revelation for me. The initial January set up costs were quite high (for me, around £300) but that's because I needed quite a few basic things, such as a coat and boots, which is, what started me on the capsule wardrobe thing in the first place.
Subsequent seasons have been fine though - I've only bougyt a couple of tops and Cardigan in summerier styles so far since my blow-out in January.

Added bonuses for me are you are no longer tempted by clothes, and you know you have your full allocation, and you keep more in control of them, so for instance if you mark or rip a white t-shirt you replace it straightaway as it's the only one you have.

heartprob · 25/06/2022 14:38

I've also done Project 333 and found it really good.
I stuck to black/navy/blue & white but struggled to get the same shade of navy for every item (even if they were from the same shop), so worth bearing in mind.

crochetmonkey74 · 25/06/2022 15:38

I love capsule wardrobe chat. I wear a uniform for work so am considering a 10 item weekend wardrobe

lovely colour combination.

zaramysaviour · 25/06/2022 16:08

Sorry OP, this is long... :)

I've been compiling a capsule wardrobe for a year or so - it's a work in progress as I still haven't found some of the things I want. I've found it's easier to do it by season, so am doing that; I also have probably more coats/jackets than I should as they've always been an intrinsic part of my style (long leather coats, velvet blazers etc). I’m paring down the number of shoes/boots but think it’s almost at a minimum now!

My 'colours' were black, purple, red and burgundy, but I've recently added navy as this was the colour of the only nice bra I could find, and I already had a navy dress I liked.

(Hmm, it seems like an awful lot now I’ve written down! But apart from shoes, coats etc, the winter items do all fit in one chest of drawers. I think I’ll pare it down more though. I housesit/travel a lot and fantasise about fitting all my clothes into one suitcase. Will def try the Project 33 thing.)

My summer wardrobe is currently 8 items exc shoes/jacket/swimming/night gear; should be about 12 items but am still looking for some:

• 1 navy midi dress (from TX Maxx) - this is sleeveless, quite low cut and quite dressy - I wear it with a plunge bra if I want to dress up and a bralette if not
• 1 black velvet sleeveless midi dress (vintage/charity shop) – think I’m going to start wearing this with tights and a jumper in winter
• 1 black mini dress (vintage/charity shop)
• 1 pair denim shorts (M&S - currently too small as have put on a bit of weight since buying, but I remain hopeful)
• 2 pairs cotton white shorts
• 1 v neck teal T shirt
• Black ribbed ££ vest
• burgundy vintage short leather jacket
• 1 pair red Fly London wedge sandals
• 1 pair Chelsea boots (Whistles)
• 2 men’s shirts – one charcoal grey, one blue checked (to wear as nightshirts in evening or over swimming shorts on beach) – think these are M&S but got them in charity shops

Wishlist for summer:
3-4 other tees which I can't find anywhere! I like strong colours and can’t find what I want (plain good quality tees in red, purple and burgundy)

If I could find the T shirts I like, the above plus a couple of bags, PJs etc would probably do me for most of my wardrobe as I intend to spend winter somewhere sunny now we can travel again.

My winter wardrobe (obv also spring/autumn depending on weather)
• 1 Phase Eight knit ¾ culottes (I love these and wear them loads; got them in sale)
• 1 pinstripe knee culottes – I wear these with black football socks for warmth and sometimes purple/green ‘pop’ socks over – actually looks quite nice :)
• 1 grey wool Hobbs culottes (charity shop. May replace both pairs of knee culottes as they’re a bit tight. Or buy one pair and then one pair of grey wool trousers)
• 1 long vintage wool tartan skirt
• 1 midi black/red polka dot skirt – might get rid of
• 2 black jumpers – one loose, one fitted
• Crew or v neck jumpers – 1 red, 1 burgundy, 2 purple, 2 grey (will probably replace a couple of these with cashmere ones)
• V neck wool jumpers – 1 red, one grey
• 1 black/tartan Joe Brown’s dress
• 1 long black velvet dress
• 1 grey pinstriped waistcoat
• 1 long grey wool coat
• 1 long black leather vintage coat (should prob sell this on, but the sleeve has been handpainted by my artist friend…)
• Chelsea boots
• Knee high heeled boots
• Hush Puppy calf wedge boots – might get rid of these
• 2 x black ‘heels’ – 1 platform, 1 shoe boot
• 1 leather backpack

Wishlist for winter:
• Leather culottes or leather trousers – would LOVE to find these as they’d make up most of my winter outfits!

Dressy/work stuff
• 1 purple dress from Diva
• 1 vintage wine cord skirt suit
• 1 black velvet trouser suit (I can’t bring myself to get rid of either suit as they obv add two jackets and two bottoms to my wardrobe as well as working as suits)

Night/lounge stuff:
• Sleep T (scruffy; want to replace
• 2 pairs M&S men’s PJs – one black/white check, one blue check
• 1 fluffy white towelling robe
• 1 fluffy purple dressing gown (will prob replace with a silk/satin one in burgundy or navy)
• 1 oversized tartan shirt

Underwear:
• 1 plunge bra
• 1 black bralette
• About 10 pairs ‘nice’ knickers plus a few pairs of scruffier/period ones - all black/hip style apart from 2 blue and 1 thong
• About 10 pairs ‘nice’ ankle socks (men’s, from House of Fraser I think)
• 2 pairs trainer socks
• Tights – black opaque, black 40D, coloured: grey, burgundy, purple

Jewellery:
I don’t wear much jewellery as I’m allergic to most metals (plus I have a lip piercing, which seems to take up ppl’s attention…). I have a black onyx vintage pendant, quite large, and 2 pairs of stainless steel earrings – one drop, one smaller.

Bags and accessories:
• Leather backpack as above; currently have orange leather bucket-style handbag from Italy but will prob replace with a simple black cross-body messenger bag
• Red leather ‘medical’ style bag, big enough to hold laptop
• 2 cloche hats – one grey, one burgundy
• 1 pair black leather gloves
• 1 pair grey cashmere sleeves (as it gives me the rage when women’s winter jumpers have ¾ sleeves!)

Accessories wishlist:
• Cashmere beanie hat (prob reversible in blue/grey or burgundy/grey)

Other stuff:
Gym rucksack, shorts, trainers etc.

OK, I need to do some work on my wardrobe…

zaramysaviour · 25/06/2022 16:13

'V neck wool jumpers – 1 red, one grey' in winter list are short sleeved.

BelindaTheChicken · 25/06/2022 16:51

Wow, thank you for taking the time to type all that out @zaramysaviour ! That looks like a good all year wardrobe. It is so annoying when you can't find the colours you like. Some seasons they just flood the stores with whatever is trendy.

OP posts:
BelindaTheChicken · 26/06/2022 10:41

I have ordered a few things...

Some dresses, a jumper and a cardi from marksies and...um...some Crocs 🤣😫 - I swore I would never, but they are looking pretty appealing to me now? Either my standards have dropped or they're trendy now (let's go with that please 😁)

Haven't stuck exactly to my colour palette, but I have gone with coral reds and navy, which will go with my wearable shoes (which are camel/tan and red) and my main handbag which is also tan.

Will not buy anything else till these bits arrive and then I can reassess.

I've also gone through my wardrobe and there is one cream coloured dress I can definitely wear and another navy one I probably can.

This is quite a fun project! I can see why people do this 😁

JaneInTheJungle · 26/06/2022 10:43

They are! You can get them on ASOS so they must be. And socks to go with them.

BelindaTheChicken · 26/06/2022 10:50

Ah @JaneInTheJungle , you say all the right things!

Fingers crossed I won't look terrible in them. I went with coral red "pepper" colour.
