‘Shag haircut’

So my hair hasn’t been cut since before lockdown. It’s now grey, shoulder length and wavy/frizzy which is news to me as it was always poker straight…. I’m looking to have it cut in a kind of ‘shag style’ like the photos I’ve attached. Just wondered how hard it is to maintain. At work I’ll have to wear it up but getting bored with the messy bun look outside of work. Hair is fine but a lot of it. I’ve been growing it for several years after a hair dye disaster when it broke off at the ends and I was forced to get it cut in a pixie ! Fwiw I’m mid 50s and a casual dresser (dungarees/dms) ! Tia !

Mine's cut like that. I just wash and leave it, straighten my fringe a bit if it's deviated to one side.
But my hair has a natural wave. I imagine if yours was straight it'd take a bit more tweaking.

The photos you show look like bird's nests.
You'd need a hairdresser who understands how your hair behaves

I'm actually going to get mine cut again tomorrow (love the length, but the layers need re-doing).
The first one is the photo l usually take to my hairdresser.
The second one is the one l'm taking tomorrow.

@katseyes7 thanks ! I like both of those. I’ve got a natural wave/kink in my hair so with product those may be achievable !

You're very welcome! I always thought mine was straight(ish) but now l'm older (a bit older than you!) and stopped straightening it after trashing it for years, l've found having long layers helps the waves as well.
This is mine if l just wash and leave it. It's very easy to manage, I use a curl enhancer just on the front where it's gone grey and a bit frizzy.

I would just go for a more shaped fringe to begin with and see how you like it, you can always go shorter. The fringe on the first picture you posted is quite short and will probably kick out, I think with your hair you need the length to give it weight. Have it shaped around the front (which will naturally layer it) with graduated long layers throughout - I'd also get the hairdresser to start at the front, sometimes when they start at the back, by the time they get to the front it has to be taken too short.

If you need to tie it back for work, make sure you tell the hairdresser this, some of the hairstyles posted look like the layers are too short to fit in a pony tail

Thanks everyone ! Advice taken !

I think it will be a nightmare to tie back neatly unless you're happy to wear headbands or lots of hair pins because the layers are too short. A fringe in summer is a nightmare the sweaty forehead will make it a mess. You will also have an anaemic looking pony or bun because the ends would have been thinned with all the layering.

SandyWedges · 22/06/2022 16:49

Make sure you tell them you want to tie it back

I think you could put it up in a peg and have a few bits down.
