Clothing emergency!

thesootherfairy · 11/06/2022 21:08

I have a proper clothing emergency and very little time to sort it. I'm literally desperate.

Next week I have an event. It's evening drinks but v posh.

Problem is that any suitable "nice" posh suitable outfits no longer fit.

I changed career after DC came along and new work so way more casual so not needed anything like this for 15 years.

I obv have dresses etc but they're too much for this event.

Event is branded smart casual but it's incredibly upmarket

I could cry as I am now too fat for everything suitable that I own.

I'm 5' 10" and a size 14 😢 I was a size 10/12 until recently so I don't know how to dress myself any more.

I've literally only got tomorrow to hit shops. I already tried to order something off Biden but I looked terrible. Like a fat sack of spuds. Wasn't suitable for my shape (extra weight seems to have gone on tummy and thighs just make it all worse).

What do I do and where to I go?
I had an idea of wide leg linen trousers (not white) but with what?
Happy to spend whatever is necessary to avoid turning up in jeans

All suggestions appreciated Flowers

Honestly, with one day, I’d forget about jumpsuits. You’ll try on heaps, taking up precious time, and probably won’t hit the jackpot. I don’t think they look good on most people.

go dress

savvy7 · 11/06/2022 21:56

The Hush jersey jumpsuit would be ideal, easy to dress up or down

HydraWater · 11/06/2022 21:59

I got this one in the red colour. Am 5.6 and a 14 is very comfortable on me even though I am also in need of work in the tummy department. A bit of shapewear underneath and it works for me. Very flattering design that seems to skim over the bad bits. I am 50+ also.

I know there are full sleeves, but what the heck, no need for a jacket or cardi then! Just a suggestion for you.

I know I said smart casual but event is very upmarket. Attendees drives Aston Martins etc. I've been to one other meeting there before. It was billed as an informal cup of tea to meet and gather but was like a full on afternoon tea. Everyone dressed designer head to toe. Hermes Birkin bags etc. so not really smart casual iyswim.

I wondered about net a porter but never ordered from them before. Any good? And how realistic are their size guides?

I like your idea of wide trousers @thesootherfairy .
Can you get to a M&S? If so they have linen trousers in different styles, also some nice linen tee shirts in blues that you like, get a longer style to help with the tummy. Top it all off with a linen jacket or overshirt, in case it is cold out doors at the event.
Dress the outfit up with chunky earrings or a necklace.

With such a tight deadline, you haven't really got time to shop around, you'll have to get everything in one stop!

Tabasco007 · 11/06/2022 22:14

If its posh and evening, then why would a smart dress work? John Lewis is worth trying to get to if you are able, or go mad online, matches, asos, LL bennet, selfridges, mint velvet, whistles....

AdaColeman · 11/06/2022 22:14

What good handbags have you already got @thesootherfairy ?

thesootherfairy · 11/06/2022 22:15

@AdaColeman I've just had a look at Massimo Dutti. Lots of wide trousers there and me and m but they're online only

I personally don't think linen looks very smart though, creases so easily, I always feel I look a mess in linen!

Not sure where in the country you are OP but the weather is meant to be gorgeous by Friday - 29 degrees in London!

thesootherfairy · 11/06/2022 22:18

@Tabasco007 am looking at LK Bennett. Now but it's not very inspiring.

@AdaColeman I've lots and lots of Mulberry bags for all sorts of occasions so that isn't a problem.
Whatever outfit I hopefully find I'll definitely have a bag to go with it.

Argh. Own fault. Stuck my head in the sand and tried not to think about it.

thesootherfairy · 11/06/2022 22:21

@Rainraingoaway21 hadn't seen the weather. It will be nice.

Just seen this

Why oh why don't they have any in my size. Shouldn't have stuck my head in the sand.

To be completely honest, the rapid weight gain is because I'm in recovery from an eating disorder and still having lots of therapy. I've just tried not to think about it.

@thesootherfairy As long as you take a nice bag, nothing else matters! 🥂 🍾

thesootherfairy · 11/06/2022 22:27

@AdaColeman 😂🥳 amen to that.

Order the Me & Em in a 16 and put an email alert in for the 14? One might be returned to them on Monday. Desperate times calls for desperate measures and it's a gorgeous jumpsuit - they did used to have a store just off Oxford Street?

thesootherfairy · 11/06/2022 22:40

Aha @Rina66 didn't know that.
I think I'll do that. Just think the 16 might be too big as my top half is def closer to 12 than 16 and I wear 31 jeans.

Argh. Never stick your head in the sand. Had I ordered a few weeks ago, I'd be wearing the jumpsuit.

Never mind.

They have 5 stores in London. Might ring and see if they have it in stock

How about the outfit in this link?

tulips27 · 11/06/2022 22:48

Oh, I've just seen your jumpsuit, that's lovely.

motogirl · 11/06/2022 22:52

Wear a summer dress that doesn't cling. I bought a couple off Amazon recently, their own brand jersey material

Weaselstoatferret · 11/06/2022 22:55

Some John Lewis stores stock Me and Em too. The jumpsuit us gorgeous. How about Never Fully dressed?

Rainraingoaway21 · 11/06/2022 23:04

Jumpsuit is lovely. Just thought I'd link to some wide leg trousers that were recommended on another thread recently, the OP brought them and said they were great and she is also tall. They do them in 4 colours.

ThatshallotBaby · 11/06/2022 23:08

Jumpsuit is great. I also like the dress @Rina66 linked to.
Just take your best bag, and feel
proud of yourself for having therapy. I’m a similar age, height and shape to you, also a stone heavier than I used to be. I can’t advise about going out clothes, but I hope you have a good night and don’t be hard on yourself.

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 11/06/2022 23:15

Linen trouser rarely look good, crease horribly and make most people's arse look dreadful. The pink jumpsuit is fabulous.

Rina66 · 12/06/2022 05:51

I've taken a closer look at the Me & Em jumpsuit @thesootherfairy it has a shirred back panel, so I think the fit will be quite flexible. I do hope you manage to get it!
