Heat damaged hair...or not?

I have very loose curls, more like waves once hair is dry as it turns to a flat fuzz. I tried curly girl and no joy, so decided to just go with my natural texture and add some serum. This has done me well for years now.

But I was just thinking about my hair and remembered that around 7 years ago I quit using GHDs and other irons. I also used to use a straightening brush, which was less harsh and left my hair more bouncy and natural.
I always subscribed to the idea that heat damaged my hair and made it frizzy, fuzzy, etc. But have only just realised that there was no change whatsoever after stopping.
The only negative side effect to using GHDs on my hair was some breakage. Since quitting my ends are still a shitshow, lol, and just naturally seem to break. It's just my hair.
I also used to have highlights but haven't for many years, so all my hair is natural now and still fuzzy, frizzy and a bit brittle. I look after it the best I can but this is what nature gave me.

So I get that heat damages hair, but it didn't seem to damage mine. Is that odd? Anyone else notice this?
