Anyone else hate going to the hairdressers…?

I’m returning to a ‘snooty’ hair dresser tomorrow to get a good chop. She is the owner of the salon and very intense and opinionated. I’ve been 3 times before and each time I’m in the chair I promise myself never to return but it is just insufferable but alas after putting a hair cut off for 6 months I’m desperate for healthier hair again as she does actually make my hair look so thick and healthy. I’m going for a full wash, blow dry and style, do I bother washing my hair tonight or just go with it a bit greasy as it’ll be washed anyway?

Do hair dressers judge what we wear? I’m just wanting to go in a hoodie and joggers with no makeup, but would be worried she’ll think I’m a right tink, but for the prices I’m paying at the same time I don’t care!!

Anyone else hate going to the hair dressers?!

Yes me I hate it too. I’m going tomorrow to get my hair coloured. I hate the small talk, I hate sitting waiting for the colour to take, being offer old magazines to look through and finally getting to the till and it’s a different price to the last time. I dread it.

Babdoc · 09/06/2022 20:02

OP, surely there are other hairdressers you could visit instead? It should be relaxing and enjoyable, not an ordeal!
I attend mine in tatty jeans and an old t shirt, my hairdresser is an absolute hoot, and his salon is always full of laughing old ladies exchanging outrageous gossip. It always lifts my spirits to go, we have a nice chat about mutual acquaintances, and he makes an excellent job of my hair at a v reasonable price. I am sure there must be similar cheery salons in your location - why not ask friends for recommendations?

I hate going to the hairdressers. I have long hair so get it cut infrequently but I've been going to the same hairdresser for years so I do trust her standing behind me with a pair of scissors whilst I'm rendered incapable of moving in the one size fits all gown. When she was on maternity leave twice, I didn't go to anyone else. I always put make up on when I go there otherwise I'd look like death with shiny, brushed hair.

catinboots123 · 09/06/2022 20:28

Love having new hair but hate hate hate the process. 4 hours of pure torture.

CookPassBabtridge · 09/06/2022 20:49

I haven't had a haircut since 2013 as I don't want to do the small talk 😂 I love getting my nails done because of the language barrier (usually Thai ladies) so it is peaceful.. as pampering should be.

Nutellaspoon · 09/06/2022 20:51

Hate it. Hate having to talk to them, hate people being near my head, unsolicited head massages can get to fuck.

I've left my hair for a year now and desperately need it cut but it takes almost 2 hours of my time and I just can't be bothered. Dh is out of the barbers in 10 mins no matter what the length. I'm seriously thinking a barbers might be the way to go - but an old fashioned one, not one of these ones where they're all young and trendy

Staynow · 09/06/2022 20:52

Yep, haven't had my haircut since I was 11. I'm not going to pay for something i hate! I have long hair and just chop the ends off every now and then.

csam · 09/06/2022 21:01

I found a lovely mobile hairdresser who comes to my house, we have a cuppa and generally chat whilst she does my
Hair. It's so much less stressful. Maybe search local Facebook for recommendations?

lindyloo57 · 09/06/2022 21:12

I hate going to the hairdressers too, I now highlight and trim my own hair, I did find one of the best hairdresser I have every had, do my highlights in my late 50s after years of not always being very happy with my colour, but she was so grumpy, never said hardly anything too me, made me feel very uncomfortable, I stay with her for 3 years, last time was just as covid started , my hair is long and straight so easy to trim, and I just highlight the top, which I had been doing between appointments for years.

Littleguggi · 09/06/2022 21:13

Hate it! Hate being told how crap my hair is, how thin it is, how dry it is, have you tried this/ that.. yes I've tried everything, I just have crap hair. So I cut it myself now.

workinprogressju · 09/06/2022 21:21

I used to hate going until earlier in the year when I found a wonderfully kind hairdresser who is lovely to everyone, it makes all the difference and has helped me big time with my phobia of hairdressers so I will stick with her. I understand only too well though OP hating going. Could you bring a book or something to read with you? Anytime in the past I always found that helped to pass the time for me

happytoseepeoplessmilesagain · 09/06/2022 21:21

I am glad I am not alone! I have a tiny amount of baby soft ultra fine hair (my scalp is visible) and I hate it being touched but also hate being told how I have 'fine hair as if I I didn't know already!

AuntTwacky · 09/06/2022 21:22

Love it

Yodaisawally · 09/06/2022 21:23

Hate it but love my hairdresser now. He knows I hate it and leaves me alone, does my hair and I get out of there. I still only go max every 6 months.

showmethegin · 09/06/2022 21:24

Yes absolutely hate it and my hairdresser is lovely. I hate having to stare at myself int eh mirror with wet hair looking like a fat sealion for 2 hours. It was bliss when we had to wear face masks in there.

mdinbc · 09/06/2022 21:36

I love going. If I won the lottery I would have my own hairdresser just to give me head massages! Even the process of the cut feels lovely. I'm not much of a chatter though, so keep it to a minimum. I even close my eyes sometimes just to relax. I totally trust my hairdresser, and she always asks for what I want at the beginning.

Funnily enough, I do tend to dress up a bit for the hairdressers. Not fancy by any means, but stylish. I feel if you look like you are pulled together, then you will get a nice cut. If you look like you don't care about yourself, then subconsciously that will factor into their performance.

I think you need to find somewhere that you are comfortable.

Sharming · 09/06/2022 22:05

God yes I detest going to the hairdressers. I hate feeling totally out of place, the small talk, the offer of tea that I then can't drink because they're doing my hair. The other people staring.

What I hate most though is the uncomfortable hair washing and totally awkward and awful head massage. I detest it.

A mobile hairdresser moved to our area a few years ago - she is brilliant, totally straightforward and honest, tells me straight what would suit me and what wouldn't, knows i hate hairdressers (the places, not the people!) so doesn't faff. And she even blow dries the dog when he comes and sits next to her and asks for fuss.

Love her. I'll never set foot in a hair salon again.

supersonicspider · 09/06/2022 22:16

Hate it because I have trichotillomania so I feel very awkward and embarrassed. I avoided going for years but then I was very brave after lockdown and found a male hairdresser who was recommended to me, in a stylish local salon who is brilliant. I emailed him beforehand to explain I was nervous and explained why. He is very tactful when discussing my hair and always cuts it well. I still hate going though although the masks made it more bearable.

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 09/06/2022 22:16

@Morrynio

Firstly you haven't found the right hairdresser that you've clicked with if that's your opinion of her.

Secondly please don't wear a hoody.

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get a good finish when someone's sat with an extra hump at their neck down?

Wear either a normal jumper or top but not a hoody or a bloody roll neck

itsnotmeitsu · 09/06/2022 23:24

@showmethegin > But I'm sure there'll be a fat sealion somewhere wishing they looked like you 🙂. We will always compare ourselves, but you may be the most attractive sealion in the sealion arena. I'm going to my hairdresser tomorrow and I hate seeing myself in the full-length mirror, but now I'll just see myself as a slightly attractive sealion.

Lastarse · 10/06/2022 00:00

I’m going tomorrow and not looking forward to it at all. I like my hairdresser and what he does is good - but not the salon. The owner works beside him and is really loud, scarey and opinionated and talks shite the entire time. Then she eats something smelly between customers and still talks loudly whilst she’s eating it.
I find it on a par with a visit to the hygienist - necessary and painful.

MsOllie · 10/06/2022 00:07

I used to hate it but I've found a really nice one now. She does a curly cut so my hair actually looks nice after and I don't have to tie it up immediately
She also chats away about random stuff and is genuinely easy to get on with

StartupRepair · 10/06/2022 00:11

Hate it. I'm good at small talk but it's somehow hard. Last time I went the salon was full of younger women screaming with laughter about how drunk they had got at the races. I just couldn't relate. Also hate being told how fine and thin my hair is.

Amdone123 · 10/06/2022 00:13

Wow, there are some bad business owners out there !
My local hairdressers are lovely, but I hate going..always have done and up until recently I only had a dry cut. Took 20 minutes and I still hated it.
After covid, I've had a change - bleached blonde, very short pixie cut. 4 hours ! £60.
I can't do it anymore so my friend shaves it for me ( free), and my niece bleaches it for me (£5 box set, and I give her £20 ).

Springduckling · 10/06/2022 00:19

I don't hate it but am very intolerant of annoying hairdressers, so if I don't like one I move on.
I hate them putting 'product ' on my hair after but my latest one doesn't. Which is much better.
