Anyone else hate going to the hairdressers…?

I’m returning to a ‘snooty’ hair dresser tomorrow to get a good chop. She is the owner of the salon and very intense and opinionated. I’ve been 3 times before and each time I’m in the chair I promise myself never to return but it is just insufferable but alas after putting a hair cut off for 6 months I’m desperate for healthier hair again as she does actually make my hair look so thick and healthy. I’m going for a full wash, blow dry and style, do I bother washing my hair tonight or just go with it a bit greasy as it’ll be washed anyway?

Do hair dressers judge what we wear? I’m just wanting to go in a hoodie and joggers with no makeup, but would be worried she’ll think I’m a right tink, but for the prices I’m paying at the same time I don’t care!!

Anyone else hate going to the hair dressers?!

Hate the full length mirrors, actually silently sobbed last time I went at my appearance.
Hate the till bit as I cant afford to tip.

12weekstoloseweight · 10/06/2022 00:33

I’d choose the dentist over the hairdressers every time - I hate it so much.

The small talk.
The noise.
The sitting starting at myself in the mirror.
The fact that I am just not their target market and ugly up their salon.

It is actual torture.

12weekstoloseweight · 10/06/2022 00:34

Oh yes and the tipping! Just add a fiver onto the bloody price and I’ll pay it - stop leaving it all ambiguous then I feel like a dick if I do tip and a dick if I don’t.

avamiah · 10/06/2022 00:37

I go to a local salon and and to be honest I like it there and they do a good job.
Many years ago I went to a very well known salon in central London were they charged you £4 for a small coffee and kept you waiting for at least a hour.
This salon no longer exists as it had to close after covid re opening and clients never went back.

Highlyquestionablehoumous · 10/06/2022 00:40

I know exactly the type of hairdresser you mean.

Don't put yourself through it, find someone else. Unfortunately I never found anyone as good as my old lovely hairdresser so now I just cut my own hair!

I don't get hairdressers who seem to take great pleasure in telling clients how dry their hair is, how much grey they have got, how the last hairdresser did a terrible job because their current cut is so awful etc. Or ones who slag off their clients on their social media. Do they not realise they are trying to get repeat custom?

Coniferhedge · 10/06/2022 07:42

Like @Amdone123 I have a bleached pixie cut, so I’m in and out for my cut in less than 20 minutes. I usually bleach it myself, but once I decided to treat myself and have it done at the salon. It was so boring! Waiting for it to develop and just sitting there for 45 minutes doing nothing. At least when I bleach at home I’ll potter around during the developing time, doing the hoovering or whatever. Always do it myself at home now.

Lolly1987 · 10/06/2022 07:49

My hairdresser still insists on everyone wearing masks and still drones on about covid. Every time I go in, the conversation ends up with her saying she's making her money now before winter in case she has to close again.

DublinDoris2000 · 10/06/2022 07:54

I hate hairdressers too. I have medium thickness curly/wavy hair. Probably every other haircut the hairdresser goes layering crazy and I come out looking like a stringy mushroom. Usually after a couple of good cuts, and i think i trust the hairdresser. I hate how long it takes, the coffee you can't drink, the small talk and the tipping.

itsnotmeitsu · 09/06/2022 23:24

@showmethegin > But I'm sure there'll be a fat sealion somewhere wishing they looked like you 🙂. We will always compare ourselves, but you may be the most attractive sealion in the sealion arena. I'm going to my hairdresser tomorrow and I hate seeing myself in the full-length mirror, but now I'll just see myself as a slightly attractive sealion.

What is it about mumsnetters who hate the process who can't summon up the courage to just ask for a dry cut or no head massage when having their hair washed?

I don't hate going because I have the kind of hair I can't cut and colour myself, and I'm not afraid to state my preferences.

Take courage.

ItWillBeOkHonestly · 10/06/2022 09:08

I hate it too! I just always opt for a dry cut so that I can get in and out as quickly as possible!

southlondoner02 · 10/06/2022 09:10

Hate it too. I have the dentist this morning and would much rather that than the hairdressers.

Have been to numerous hairdressers in a range of cities. Some are nice, not nice, chatty, quiet - still dread going. I usually just go to the nicest one, but then their salon closes down and am back to trying to find another one. All of it is unpleasant

UrbanMage · 10/06/2022 09:21

I hate small talk but didn't mind the rest. I have awfully thick hair and they hated blow drying it as it took forever. Now my SIL does my hair (she's a hairdresser but pops round after work) and although I don't get the lovely head massage and pampered feeling, it's not awkward and I get what I want. I dye my own hair though as I'm good at it.

Dragonfly97 · 10/06/2022 09:42

I used to hate going to the hairdresser; I used to go to independent salons ( years ago!) Hated the grilling- "who cut it last?", the silent judging, telling me what I should have done, etc, but this year I knew I had to do something with my hair, DH suggested I book an appointment at Toni & Guy ( DH paid as well!) Best thing I ever did; my stylist is lovely, she did what I asked, we had lots in common, it was a lovely stress free morning, and she did a really good job. It wasn't that expensive either. So pleased I went.

TerryOrange · 11/06/2022 10:42

I'm a hairdresser and this makes me so sad

That said I am freelance and the woman I go to swears, is very loud and shouts in my ear the whole time. I don't like it either!

blindsinthecity · 11/06/2022 10:47

Ummm

your title is somewhat relatable but your specific post is not.

My hairdresser is kind and gets my hair exactly how I want it so I happily return although I hate being at the salon for hours and hours. However there’s really no reason for you to continue returning to this hairdresser after what you’ve written as it sounds like an overall bad experience?

sorry but there’s 100s of great hairdressers out there. If your hair dresser was as good as she thinks, she would have moved on by now eg new salon, new high profile clients/events, training new staff etc.

RampantIvy · 11/06/2022 10:48

@TerryOrange I feel that a lot of the issues could be overcome if the customer could communicate their needs in a friendly non confrontational manner instead of sitting in fuming silence.

A simple "I'm not keen on head massages" to the person washing their hair, for example, or "I hope you don't mind, but I don't feel like talking today" to the hairdresser. And then get a book/phone/magazine out to read.

In terms of seeing your face in the mirror either ask for the mirror to be covered or just suck it up.

I know right?! I never get that either.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/01/2023 11:02

Yes. Cut it myself now, looks fine.

absolutelyincandescentwithrage · 05/01/2023 11:06

Me! I've got a lovely hairdresser now, and go more regularly than I used to (but still only two or three times a year).

My mum went religiously every six weeks and found it relaxing. Once I was away from home and not being nagged to get a haircut, I went much less. Then about 30 years ago a hairdresser snipped my earlobe. That made me very reluctant to go!

YorkieTheRabbit · 05/01/2023 18:19

I’m not keen on going either, mainly because every hairdresser insists on drying it flat and straightening it, even though it’s wavy.
This said, my hair is cut well, had about six inches off last time and I’m really happy with it.
The previous one was very quiet but she left last summer, the one who now cuts my hair is the total opposite but not opinionated just very chatty.
The salon actually advertises silent appointments, you can request them at the time of booking.

Apairofsparklingeyes · 05/01/2023 18:51

I highly recommend getting a mobile hairdresser. It’s so much cheaper, quicker and quieter than a salon.

I agree with the pp who said don’t wear a hoodie because it makes cutting your hair more tricky!

MrsJBaptiste · 05/01/2023 20:32

Yeah, definitely a chore for me rather than a treat although I love my hair when it's done.

My hairdresser is nice and we chat but she's ot a friend so I doubt either of us are that interested in what the other is saying! If I could turn up, sit with just the radio on and my kindle then I'd probable go more often.
