Anyone gone grey then dyed back to a darkish brown ?

I'm 56 and I've grown all my hair dye out. It's a steely grey at the front and sides but brown underneath at the back. My hair was destroyed a few years ago after I had a head of cheap highlights put in and parts of it literally broke off. I ended up having a pixie cut and basically starting all over again. My hair is now shoulder length and I tend to wear it up in a messy bun. Partner likes it, DS 14 says it makes me look older but still attractive 😂. Sadly every time I catch site of myself I just look washed out. Hate to say it but also older than I am (which I appreciate is a bit irrational and ageist). Initially I quite liked it, wore the archetypal bright lipstick, headband etc but now I just feel it's dragging me down. Doesn't help that I've not had a haircut for ages.
I'm going away at the weekend so really want to look nice. I'm so tempted to just shove a brown hair dye on and be done with it. Anyone gone back to dyeing after a period without ?

Just noticed this is an old thread, what did you do in the end @Odessafile ?

CambsAlways · 11/12/2022 11:22

I know what you mean LizzieSiddal a big change going from long and then having cut to go grey, I think I will have mine in different style as mines chin length any help to speed up the process 🤪 will go pixie cut I think but not too short. It’s not the best of weathers to cut too much off, Although I do love make up I’m not a fan of the full make up look, we shall see

I few mine out in lock down - have some highlights put in from time to time as it is a bit patchy, but don’t go regularly - I couldn’t see myself going back to full colour at all now

CambsAlways · 11/12/2022 14:38

I’ve noticed a lot say that once they have tried going grey they either stick to it or go another light colour due to skin tone crumpet

I had a lot of fun with some colleagues trying on different hair colours with this L'Oreal selfie tool www.loreal-paris.co.uk/virtual-try-on

Confirmed that I shouldn't go back to my original colour and definitely stay away from blue !

@Cocolapew hi there ! So I had it cut, a good few inches off, into a choppy bob.
I actually like the grey colour and it's definitely more on trend but find maintenance of the style tricky and time consuming.
My hair has a wave but not really enough to last between washes so I'm having to curl it loosely with my tongs. When I've not curled it it looks a bit messy. Remember Crystal tips ? 😮 Having it in a messy bun definitely aged me. I like having a blunt cut fringe and more of a contemporary style. I guess the upkeep is a bit of a pain.

Sounds lovely 🙂 even the Crystal Tips hairdo 😆
I've grew mine over the last year, I like it long but I really need to get it tidied up,I cut my own hair for 20 years when it was short but can't really do it when there's length.
A choppy bob sounds like it would do me 🤔

Odessafile
I have a curler that I bought from Amazon that sucks up the hair and gives me all over curls in 6 minutes. The curls last perfectly for one day and then next my hair is sort of wavy with a nice amount of volume.

Cocolapew · 11/12/2022 16:17

I worry about using heated tongs because I've heard of them burning(?) the hair and turning white or silver bits yellow.
Is the sucky thing hot air @NoelNoNoel ?

Odessafile · 11/12/2022 20:07

@Cocolapew I remember your hair on the 'pixie cut threads' and it always looked great. Must have being doing something right 🙂 I don't have the temperature particularly high but that probably explains why the curls don't last !
@NoelNoNoel I've seen something like that on facebook and always wondered how good they were.

Oh, thank you 🙂

Purpleavocado · 11/12/2022 20:47

Yes, I managed 8 months, it was growing in such a boring steely colour, I felt drab. Glad I dyed it back to brown.

NoelNoNoel · 11/12/2022 20:49

This is similar to mine and here are lose curls about 8 hours after doing them having spent just 5 minutes doing them. Then I turn my hair upside down, hairspray it and then sort of play around with it with my fingers. The next day looks good too.
