Can I half commit to a fringe?

Getting long hair chopped soon, into a messy chin length bob. I'm hankering for a fringe, but whenever I get one I can't deal with the maintenance. It is always gappy and annoying. Is there a semi fringe look that I can go for? Pinned back when I can't be bothered, but lurking around being fringey when necessary? What can I ask for that won't look like 90's curtains (boy's haircuts that is, not actual drapes)

Well, reading through your post, I was thinking curtain bangs, definitely. But not sure it meets the requirement of not looking like 90s curtains! Done well, I don't think they do, they're more of a slight 70s vibe to me.

Ah I think you are right, thank you! I get a hankering for a fringe about every 3 or 4 years and immediately regret it when I get one, but equally hate my forehead just hulking around up there

I have curtain bangs - not my idea to do it but it looks OK. Basically it's like having some hair that's too short for a ponytail when it's tied back, and not that noticeable when down. So like starter curtain bangs, if you like.
