If you take vitamins…what do you take?

Just being nosey & wondered what (if any) people take?

I’m thinking should I be taking something as I don’t atm.

Iron infusions
Vitamin D tablets

High dose liquid vitamin D sometimes

(Lots of medications too!)

Innocenta · 09/06/2022 19:33

Oh, also potassium infusions

Innocenta · 09/06/2022 19:35

I'm on three medications for allergies as mine are quite serious / complicated Sad

CSJ113 · 09/06/2022 19:50

I take:
Vit D +K2
Methylfolate (for slightly low folate)

I had a recent iron infusion for low Ferritin - but have been told if I need to top up iron in future to take one Ferrous Fumarate tab every SECOND day (you can't absorb more than about 20mg iron daily and will just get an upset stomach).

Was also advised to avoid multivitamins as you can OD on some of them (e.g. Vit A, iron) and you should get blood tests to check for actual deficiencies and treat them accordingly.

@ElEmEnOhPee Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry to hear it took so long to get a diagnosis.

SummerDays95 · 10/06/2022 06:29

I have Sainsburys beauty vitamins and vital proteins collagen. Loved pregnacare new mum vits but feel I should stop taking those as I'm no longer a new mum!

ArabeI · 10/06/2022 07:20

@SummerDays95 I know of a couple of people who take prenatal vitamins, and are not pregnant, as they say they're good for hair and nails.

I haven't tried it and don't know just how beneficial that is, though.

SummerDays95 · 10/06/2022 08:01

@ArabeI I think I might still take them a few days a week, it's just the iron content that I would worry about as it's higher in pregnancy ones. But maybe a few days a week would be okay!

AllLopsided · 11/06/2022 22:18

I'm a bit late coming back but thanks @jennywasvexed I had no idea about the environmental issues with krill oil.

I was pleased to find it as every other omega 3 supplement left a fishy aftertaste Blush so not sure what to replace it with.

lugeforlife · 12/06/2022 10:49

I take

Magnesium - helps sleep, notice when I don't take it.
Vit d and k spray - been deficient in the past
Iron spray - been low in the past
Starflower oil and b6 - mostly for boob pain. Seems to have a noticeable impact.

I used to take collagen but it made no difference after 6 months so I stopped.

My mother has always been a champion of supplements and is a very healthy 75 (although eats a great diet and is very active ;)).

Gwenhwyfar · 12/06/2022 11:00

Multivitamins for women - to make sure there is enough iron
Omega 3 (I stopped cod liver oil because of the smell)
Vitamin D in winter
Magnesium when my digestion is too sluggish

I have zinc, but would only take it if I have a cold/covid as I've read it shouldn't be taken all the time.

I used to take collagen, but it was blocked at customs. Does anyone know of a good brand made in the EU?

I'm inspired to try biotin from this thread.

Can anyone recommend good probiotics/prebiotics?

Gwenhwyfar · 12/06/2022 11:04

"Was also advised to avoid multivitamins as you can OD on some of them (e.g. Vit A, iron) and you should get blood tests to check for actual deficiencies and treat them accordingly."

Well doctors may say that, but are they willing to give us constant blood tests for deficiencies?
They used to say don't take vitamin D for ages until there was a complete about turn and now almost everyone should be taking it.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 12/06/2022 13:16

Just out of interest - what's the best cod liver oil supplement to take?

Also if you're suffering with menopause and dodgy bowels what can you take too?

PS - think it is chelated magnesium - can concur that it is excellent for sleep - especially peri/menopausal types. Don't bother with the Floradix liquid form of it though!

Life Extension 2 per day multivitamin (recommended by a nutritionist)
Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega fish oil with vitamin D (recommended by the same nutritionist)
Solgar vitamin B12 (for long Covid)
Solgar co-enzyme Q-10 (recommended by private GP for long Covid)

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/06/2022 13:42

Opps I forgot, not really a vitamin but I also take Symprove daily (pre/probiotic). Also recommended by a nutritionist who said Symprove or VSL3 are the only pre/probiotics worth taking.

Anon778833 · 12/06/2022 13:43

I take high strength vitamin C with zinc. And vitamin D if I remember.

friedgreentomato6 · 12/06/2022 13:45

I take the Seven Seas multivitamins for women, find them really good and they have pretty much all the essential vitamins

Springduckling · 12/06/2022 13:58

I take boots Calcium with vit D and K. Am in my 50s.

Teen Dd is a vegetarian and takes Wellteen tablets.

I took Symprove for 6 months and was really disappointed. Someone had said it was good for psoriosis and IBS.
It made no difference to me and was expensive.

Tinks15 · 13/06/2022 19:30

Thanks all - sorry I’m days late in replying!

I’m 31 & don’t really know what I should be taking so need some guidance.

I take vitamin d, mix up the probiotics every few weeks (lacto tablets, soil based gummies or drinking kefir).

Both have helped my energy levels, probiotics have helped clear my skin and make it less dry.

Off to look up biotin 😀

MiseryWIthAStent · 13/06/2022 19:53

B12, iron, collagen, vitamin c and vitamin d

I see some of you take collagen, what is it good for? Any particular brand? TIA

LadyEloise1 · 29/06/2022 15:14

I have tried so many vitamins to try and improve my nails.
I take a multi vitamin and a Hair, Nails and Skin supplement for years. I have taken extra biotin, zinc and selenium. All to no avail 😩
However my hair growth has improved.
In desperation, I am now taking 2 squares of jelly every day as advised by a Mumsnetter. Here's hoping 🤞
