Why are size charts not accurate?

Anyone else have this problem? I've noticed with more than one brand in recent months the size charts on their websites are totally off.

This week I ordered a pair of trousers and a skirt from John Lewis (own brand) and both are huge. The size chart says fits waist X cm and my waist measurement is actually about 5cm bigger so it doesn't make any sense.

I've had the same with Fat Face and Lucy & Yak too, and M&S is always particularly bad for inconsistent sizing. It's making online shopping really difficult.

I don’t know OP but I have the same issue! My measurements usually line up with a size 10 on the charts but it’s often a size 8 which fits best. It makes no sense. It’s across many different brands as well.

It seems to be standard unfortunately. You'd think that shops would do better at this now that people shop online so much and they complain about the cost of returns.

I had high hopes with Uniqlo and spent ages filling in the website questionnaire about my height, weight, measurements, age, shape etc so it could tell me what size to order and then when the item arrived, it was too big and the size smaller would have probably have been better - annoyingly I only ordered one size, because I stupidly thought it would be right, and you have to pay for returns.

We aren't anywhere near a Uniqlo as they inexplicably have about 20 stores in London and almost none anywhere else but when I actually did have a couple of hours spare in London due to a work trip, I went into the big Oxford Street branch and tried on about 20 different things, only to find that I'm somewhere between a M and an XL, depending on what item it is.
