I've never known what jewellery suits me. How do you know? I see some women who carry off statement necklaces brilliantly (take prue leith) but I look like a drag queen who's raided a dressing up box. Equally if I wear a dainty wrist bracelet it looks silly on my chunky wrists so how do you know and get it right??

I just follow my personal taste and wear what I like. I think if you are not used to big pieces, you are always going to feel a bit weird about them but it’s just your own perception. Equally, I understand you want to feel at ease with what you have.
I’d suggest you to try on a few pieces from a cheap place (like accessorize) where you can try on a lot of different styles and just see what looks good on you.
Maybe you just need something in between (not too dainty, not too gipsyesque).
Color of metal also plays a big part I think. If you have cooler tones (ie: pale skin which is more on the pink side), silver or rose gold is best, whereas if you are more yellow/olive or brown, then gold might suit you better.
