Maxi dress too long - sandal help!

I’ve bought this dress for an event today and I love it (it has pockets ) but it’s a proper floor sweeper and is just an inch or two too long. I can walk in it but just tripped going upstairs. I’m 5’5” and a size 12.

I can’t decide whether to wear heels or get it shortened. I’d prefer to wear flat sandals ideally, but what about wedge or platform sandals? If so, what colour? I hate ankle straps so I’m struggling to find anything suitable. Not that my feet will be on show! Any ideas?

I think that bottom band of black could like quite smart as a thinner band, but then I'd always opt for flats!

NancyDrooo · 01/06/2022 21:25

Thanks @dudsville I’d be happier in flats as I’m totally out of practice in heel wearing) but then I thought chunky/platform sandals could also be worn with shorter dresses or even flared jeans. Just not too chunky… I’m a bit stuck!

Could you put a belt on and puff the top up over it bringing the length up a bit

TheLadyDIdGood · 01/06/2022 23:02

That's a really lovely dress, where did you get it from? I'd have it shortened a bit at the bottom to avoid tripping all over the place.

oviraptor21 · 01/06/2022 23:06

Agree with PP to shorten the dress. Even with wedges the length will be an issue.

Beautiful dress though - seconding the request for where you bought it!

Branster · 02/06/2022 07:03

If it just touches the floor as it is, I wouldn't shorten it and wear flats if you already have some you like as you prefer flats.

Maxi dresses and stairs is an art on its own which I am yet to master gracefully. But you always have to discretely slightly lift the dress as you go up. Especially if it's one if those travellators.
(Maxi dresses and shopping trolleys another issue with the dress getting caught in the wheels but you won't have this problem).
Apart from that, I basically swan around in them and feel fabulous.

I am a maxi dress addict, super long, and going up the stairs at home whilst carrying something with both hands is quite hilarious to watch as I have to take sideways strides in a funny way to avoid tripping. Always skipping up and down stairs when wearing short dresses to compensate and enjoy the freedom of movement. I'm probably not using stairs in the safest way!

I'd just hem it a couple of inches, it won't make any difference to the design.

Thanks so much everyone, it was from TKMaxx typically! I’m going to a different branch today so I’m going to see if I can get a size down in the hope it’ll be a smidge shorter (and then stop stuffing my face with biscuits to make sure the waist fits…)

Gorgeous dress. I read your title as ‘.. scandal help’ and was waiting for the juicy part. Grin

agree with the above that it will look just as lovely with a thin black band at the bottom

NancyDrooo · 02/06/2022 09:35

I’ll let you know if I get a smaller size today, if not I’ll practice walking in it with flats on and see what happens 😀
If I do decide to get it shortened it wouldn’t make much difference to the look of it, only needs an inch or so off.

I have the same issue - I get mine shortened, a local lady does it for me for a reasonable fee
