Protein hair mask making my hair dry...why?

turquisie · 01/06/2022 12:52

I have bleached hair.
I spend a fortune on expensive hair products but no help.
I have a redken extreme protein mask which I use every day when I wash my hair.
I keep it on for a few hours yet my hair is still brittle and so dry and snapping
What am I doing wrong ?
Any recommendations?

I do t know about you but wine hair types don’t suit protein. Have you tried a moisturising product?

Is your hair too brittle to be rescued? Do you go to a salon or do it at home?

When I was blonde, I’m very dark haired, I used Aveda damage remedy. Costs a fortune but I’ve never found a substitute.

You are not supposed to use protein every day, it hardens the hair and makes it brittle. Also you are supposed to use a moisturising treatment after using protein stuff on your hair.

It's not the same as a conditioner.

I go to a salon
Come out and my hair feels lovely
Wash my hair myself and use my redken mask and my hair feels so so brittle

I use the redken mask instead of conditioner

I did this for a while - you're overusing the protein treatment which is actually making it worse. Focus on deep conditioning.

I have coarse, greying wavy hair that has been bleached. It's a delight. It's a constant battle against dryness and frizz. I use Bleach London Reincarnation mask once a week. It's the only thing I've found that helps.

I think I have too much protein in my hair!
Does anyone know a good moisturising conditioner without any protein or anything in it?

It's too much protein.

Kerastase shampoo and conditioner is really nice, the nutritive one is for dry hair. Use heat protector and a nice serum. You can do a hair mask once a week and see how it goes.

Purple shampoo once a week too to keep blonde fresh.

I switched from highlights to balayage so I didn't have to get it done as often which made a big difference to the condition of my hair.

I sometimes use the Aphogee two step protein treatment (they only recommend that every 6 weeks for reasons talked about above)..

The process itself is a bit of a faff, but the balancing moisturiser thing that is the second step is really nice, and they sell it separately as well on Amazon - sorry, I can't seem to paste the link but if you type in Aphogee balancing moisturiser it will come up, it's in a purple bottle.

I think it's quite a common mistake to think that protein treatments are just like a condition and to overdo it!

I quite like the Coco & Eve hair mask.
Or Aussie 3 Min Miracle.

I also use the moisture hair mask rather than conditioner. So use it daily.

turquisie · 01/06/2022 14:30

I can't believe I stupidly thought the redken protein mask could be used every day!
I thought it would work better than conditioner
No wonder my hair is so brittle
Thankyou for the suggestions I'm going to see if I can see them on look fantastic
