Petite - retailers just don't get it

Whilst I am glad the likes of M&S offer a wider choice of shorter trouser lengths, I feel that manufacturers/retailers, still don't get it. I am short but have a proportionate body, which means that if high waisted cargo trousers are simply made shorter on the leg, the waist is likely to hit my armpits (exaggerating here, but hopefully you get my point).

I am interested in these cargo trousers specifically, and the short length fits well, except the waist is uncomfortably high. I have searched elsewhere for mid/low raise cargos, but all seem to be wide leg, which is not flattering for me as a short person. www.marksandspencer.com/tencel-rich-cargo-camo-tapered-trousers/p/clp60528314?color=DARKKHAKI&prevPage=srp

So, my question is, has anyone seen petite cargo style trousers, pref in cotton (just not polyester), that are low or mid waisted with slim/straight legs? TIA.

No real advice but I couldn’t agree more. Petite used to be shortening all proportions, not just the legs. I wish I’d hung on to my trousers from the 90s (ignoring the fact I’m too fat for them now)

I sympathise from the other end of the spectrum - the tall range just has added leg length without taking into account body proportions.
do you specifically need a petite range? JL has loads of slim fitting cargo trousers - these are fairly low waisted and cropped so might be short enough for you Cargo

No advice but I was ranting about the same thing to my mum yesterday!

Petite doesn't just mean short. I have real issues with shoulders/back being narrow but retailers just make tops shorter not smaller all over 🤦🏻‍♀️

Iamshort · 01/06/2022 07:10

I actually have the opposite problem. I have a regular sized body, fine with normal tops but just have short legs.

Maybe try Next. All of their 'high waisted' petite jeans have been cutting me in half around my hips lately. Plus they have no room in the stomach, even for an 18!

I also just wanted to say thanks for posting those trousers. I've been looking for something exactly like those but not been able to find any in shorter lengths. Never thought to look at Marks.

Glad I could help @Iamshort. The trousers are really nice if you don't mind the high waist and they come in lots of colours.

I have those trousers and they are so comfortable. I am fairly long bodies though so the higher waist actually sits on my waist, so I can understand that they may be too high for you. I wear mine all the time.

No helpful suggestions but I share your frustration, I have a short torso and so much petite stuff is just sliced off at the bottom rather than adjusted proportionately. I have basically given up with petite ranges and just take everything to a seamstress.

Check out the Danni Minogue range, I think its only on QVC. I've seen some videos and she speaks about the importance of overall tailoring.

Iheartmysmart · 01/06/2022 11:31

I feel your pain! Am so fed up with trying on petite clothing and the only adjustments are the length. Dresses where the waist isn’t in proportion and sits on my hips, petite trousers where the waist is too high or the waist to crotch ratio is too long. I’ve even noticed it with bras, the underwire is too high and digs in under my arms. Bloody annoying.

Ericaceae · 01/06/2022 12:24

Shamlessly peacemaking in case someone can help OP. I feel your pain! It's shoulders, sleeve length, waist height, and strap length that are my biggest pet peeves. I'm short all over - it's not just my legs!

rnsaslkih · 01/06/2022 12:29

They don't get tall either OP. They just think a few more inches on the leg will do it and don't adjust the rise. So, the trousers don't come up high enough on the bum!

TheOGCCL · 01/06/2022 12:38

I actually had the opposite experience in Next. The short fit in jeans wasn't short enough (I'm five foot five, not petite but have very short legs) so I tried the petite and the same size (an 8) I couldn't get on and the 10 was too tight as well, suggesting they hadn't just hacked the length.

No advice but my cousin would agree 100%.

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 01/06/2022 17:12

Aw good to see it's not just me. And don't get me started on blazers. I used to be able to get them from Banana Republic Petite but that's over now. There's Hobbs petite, but I don't necessarily want that over tailored look. I actually want the 'oversized' boyfriend style blazer a la Cos, just adjusted to my proportions so I don't look like I am wearing my husband's suit.
