What order..? Pre make up stuff

I seem to be watching too many skin care and make up vids, which has led to some extra purchases Wink.

So I now have moisturiser and eye cream (normal for me), a hydration mist and primer. But apparently I should also be using sun screen. Which order do you put everything on? Do you need them all?

I wouldn’t use sunscreen if moisturiser has spf in it anyway. Unless you live in a hot country spf in moisturiser with added sunscreen seems like overkill!
I do eye cream, moisturise (not on eye area as spf irritates my eyes!), glowy primer and then if I can be bothered foundation over that. Hydration mist to finish?

I disagree - I would never trust a moisturiser or make up with SPF as they often aren't good enough and/or you don't apply enough. I put SPF on after moisturiser but before primer (although I rarely wear it).

EmbroidedFlowers · 30/05/2022 19:32

Moisturiser and eye cream, spf, primer then makeup. I don't use a hydration mist 🙂

Sparkletastic · 30/05/2022 19:33

Serum
Moisturiser (if you need it)
Spf 50
Primer (if you like it)
Base
Rest of make up
Setting spray (if you use it)

WooNoodle · 30/05/2022 19:33

I have an spf spray - it's great. Goes on over the top of makeup.

You need loads of moisturiser to get the same SPF

MrOllivander · 30/05/2022 19:37

Depends how much moisture you need
I tend to use eye creams at night as mine is a retinol one
Morning I do serum, moisturiser, SPF. If your skin is oily you might just need serum OR moisturiser and SPF

pokerdone · 30/05/2022 19:37

Thanks everyone.

Also have I been doing things wrong...? Seeing a lot of doing eyes before doing base. I guess easier clean up if you drop any?

What does a serum do? Just extra moisture?

I've hit 42 and my skin has definitely changed!

For some reason I thought I read you had a serum! If you don't then ignore it Grin
Some have specific ingredients, some just for hydration

MrOllivander · 30/05/2022 19:40

And yes I do eyes before base
Well, upper lid eyeshadow and liner, then base/brows/blush etc, then lower lid stuff and mascara to finish

dancingqueen345 · 30/05/2022 19:42

My routine is;

  • cleanse
  • tone
  • vitamin C serum
  • hylauronic acid serum
  • moisturiser with an SPF
  • Primer
  • eye primer
  • eye makeup
  • base foundation
  • blush/bronze/highlight

I got stuck in MANY a skincare YouTube rabbit hole during lockdown but my skin has never looked better and I get great satisfaction from the routine 🤣🤣

TheChosenTwo · 30/05/2022 19:43

Spf is a must (for me). I’m trying to keep my skin looking as young as possible (I suppose, never really thought of it that way, I just see it as taking care of my face!) - sun damage ages you incredibly quickly.
I don’t skip it!

TheChosenTwo · 30/05/2022 19:44

Although I’m also using dermatica which makes the spf even more important…

pokerdone · 30/05/2022 19:51

Can someone do an idiots explanation of serums?! I see the hylauronic (sp! Confused) one in different brands.

dancingqueen345 · 30/05/2022 19:54

@pokerdone I can't, I just do what people told me to... possibly not the best approach.

The Ordinary have a quiz you can do to build a routine based on questions (you can obv then go buy other brands) theordinary.com/en-gb/regimen-builder.html

pokerdone · 30/05/2022 20:06

@dancingqueen345 that seems to be the approach I'm also going for!

Thanks for the link.

I would use your hydration mist first, as a toner step.

Moisturiser & eye cream (I don't use eye cream I think it's just overpriced moisturiser in a little pot)

Spf 50 - you might not need moisturiser - just use this

Primer

Make up

pokerdone · 30/05/2022 21:40

Thanks @doadeer

I just realised that my mist has hyaluronic acid in anyway....

Yes I would mist first for sure. I use some Korean mists after working out to replen moisturise.

Aworldofmyown · 30/05/2022 21:47

You need a good night time routine too. I use most of my serums at night.

I've got the Clinique Smart Night and matching eye cream Hmm. Maybe I should use the mist before the night moisturiser too?
