Hand cream for very dry skin

Please could you recommend me a hand cream?

I've been using Roche Posay Cicaplast Main, which is good for the dryness, but I’d like something a bit more “special” if that makes sense?
thanks

But what is causing the dryness?

Diet, illness, washing or cleaning products?

Do you use gentle bar soap (in preference to harsh shower gels) and wear rubber gloves if using cleaning products?

Aesop has a hand/body cream that is famously effective and relatively luxurious. (I forget what it’s called.)

Olive oil and coconut oil are both good at softening hands, but a bit impractical if you’re going to be handling paper or delicate fabrics, or driving!

Not quite sure what you mean by 'special'. I've got very dry skin and these are the ones that work for me:

Body Shop hemp hand cream
Kiehl's Ultimate Strength Hand Salve
O'Keeffe's Working Hands

I'm slightly sorry to say it (boycotting the body shop because of their unpleasant social media posts targeted at JK Rowling) but the hemp hand cream is the best of these. The other two are pretty good substitutes though.

E45 is the only one that works for me, I use it a lot.

If you want fancy pants for l'occitane shea hand cream. Not the fragrance stuff, the original. If you want really really effective and weirdly not greasy feeling, there's a green one called keefes working hands or similar. Hands down the best for dry hands.

Ah that's it o'keefes. I'd be careful with the hemp one I know some people have weird painful reactions to it.

I think The Chemistry Brand - Hand Chemistry Intense Youth Complex Cream is incredible. Best hand cream Ive used.

I feel exactly the same - best hand cream ever but I'm boycotting them until they get their act together and stop treating women as a joke. I'm having great success with Vaseline Instant Dry Skin Rescue - it's not specifically a hand cream, can be used anywhere, but comes in a small tube and does wonders for my dry hands and nails

Nursem cream is fantastic.
Designed by nurses for very dry hands.

The one that works best for me, having used much more expensive ones, is the Palmer's coconut oil one, which is about £2. I know that wasn't your question though.

But the game changer for me is how I now wash my hands. I switched to Neals Yard hand wash about a year ago, use warm rather than hot water to wash my hands and pat them dry with the towel instead of rubbing them dry. I read an article about tips for hand washing, and it's made such a difference to the level of dryness. I also try to always wear gloves outside in winter, and use rubber gloves when washing up.

My husband reacts badly to the hemp cream. We both swear by O'Keefes hand cream :)

countrylifer · 30/05/2022 21:38

Cerave is great - I used to rely on neutrogena but couldn't bear how greasy it is (and how hard it is to get out the tube!). Cerave has sorted my hands right out. Now investigating the body cream for my snake like legs...

Onewildandpreciouslife · 30/05/2022 22:56

Some interesting ideas here, thank you - I will investigate. PP are also right that if I bought rubber gloves my hands wouldn’t be nearly as bad!

I use Aveeno body lotion for very dry skin (that's its name, not just me describing it Grin) and find it really effective. CCS foot cream, Lanolips for lips and cuticles, Sunday Riley Luna for my face... bloody dry skin, it's cost me thousands over the years

Another vote for o keefes
