How will my highlights fare with a dark semi permanent over the top?

Will they just turn orange? I have some highlights in the top layer of my hair only around my parting and I’m a bit bored of them…keen to go darker again but worried if I put a darker semi on top that they will just fade to orange. Any hairdressers/colourists any wise words to stop me ending up with orange hair?

I’m not a hairdresser, but beware of anything too ash, as they could go green!
you want to use a warm golden brown over the top I should think.

i usually get warm tones but it inevitably goes orange…I maybe just need to embrace my underlying ginger tones
