foundation help for the unknowledgeable

HI

I am 57 yof , not been a make up person due to going into boots etc and seeing the massive range and not knowing what to choose.

for work I normally have an aldi cc cream, and for going out a boots no 7 something, the staff put a thing on my face to get the colour.

both are finished now and I would like to make a change but dont know what to

I see women at my work with a power type thing that's foundation , there is creams , liquid etc etc and I cant tell you the amount of times I go in and come out with nothing at all as I find it overwhelming. Went into a posh shop once and the lady gave me a make over, honestly, I came out looking like coco the clown

my skin , dry , been told its combination but that was a long time ago. I am okay with everything else, its the foundation / power bit I am confused and require support with

so I need something for work , nothing heavy , I normally go sans make up but every now and then I put a cc cream on with lippy and mascara.

I have heavy hooded eyelids, eyeshadow is never seen even if I put it on lol

and also something for the times I go out

dont have a fortune to spend

any pointers would be great

Tbh I think your best bet is going to the no7 counter again! They do really good "basic" makeup.they do a foundation called hydraluminous that you might like.

MarmaladeLime · 29/05/2022 14:11

And how do you like to put it on? With your fingers?

BlackSwan · 29/05/2022 14:47

Yes just use your fingers. I've tried brushes & spongers etc but fingers work best for me. Considering you're not big on makeup at the moment, I would just ask for something which gives 'light coverage' & just ask for some help getting the shade right.

I use lancomes thick foundation (ie not the super light one).

So it goes:

Cetaphil daily moisture with factor 50
Primer cream
Lancome

On eyes I use an eyelid primer and as I also have hooded eyes I put my eyeshadow higher than the crease which give the appearance of less hooded eyes.

It's not that scary really it just takes practice to find one that's for you.

IMO the boots foundations are awful.

It might help if you can get some samples before you commit to buying anything new. It is really difficult to work out if you are going to like something based on trying it out in a shop. I usually take some of those little plastic pots with screw on lids (you can get a set of them on Amazon or Ebay for a few pounds) and ask at the counters for a sample. They are usually happy to do this. That way you can try it out in your own time, over a few days, and see if you like it or not.

I am using the new Lisa Eldridge foundation at the moment, which I absolutely love. She actually sells sample cards for £2, which give you 4 shades of the foundation to try. I bought a couple of these and this let me try it out for a good few days and also see which colour suited me best.

L'Oréal perfect match is a nice, light foundation. You can Google the different shades and decide if you're warm/cool/netrual in your colouring. I have dry skin and I find it sits nicely on it. It's easily buildable if you want more coverage. It was on offer for 9.99 in Boots with a 3 4 2 offer the other week. Sadly they didn't have many testers.

MarmaladeLime · 29/05/2022 16:16

There is a website called findation so if you put your NO7 match in there if you like the colour it will tell you which colour is closest in lots of other foundation. Then as PP said you could get a sample off ebay often
