Is the bleach ruining my hair?

pinkflowersinmyhair · 23/05/2022 12:16

I'm naturally dark brown.
Every 10 weeks I get a full of head of highlights.
My hair has gone so so thin.
I've just bought the kerastase Genesis shampoo and the redken extreme mask.

Any tips on how to help my hair ?
Also stupid question but rather than her going over my hair each time with bleach ..can she not just do my roots ?

Is she going over the full length? If so why? Yes just ask for a full head but root only.
If you're continually bleaching I imagine it will be damaging your hair.

I have a full head once every few months but yes roots and she occasionally picks out strands to brighten and then toner all over.

In terms of general hair health etc then eat plenty of protein and get your vitamins in.

pinkflowersinmyhair · 23/05/2022 12:21

I didn't even know that was a thing.
Roots only.
I would much prefer that
Yeah she goes over everything each 10 weeks.

I’m surprised that you have any hair left.

Is she fully trained?

pinkflowersinmyhair · 23/05/2022 12:31

Yeah she is the manager of the salon.
I honestly didn't think this was a issue.
So how do they do highlights just the root?
Just literally paint the root and leave the rest
How would it go in the foil ?

Are you sure she's trained or are you sure she's not just doing the roots in the foils?

I was a hairdresser 31 years ago and I've never seen it done all over everytime.

Change your salon while you still have some hair.

TabithaTittlemouse · 23/05/2022 12:40

Are you maybe getting confused and it’s toner that she’s using?

I think you need to speak with her. Find out what she is doing and why?

pinkflowersinmyhair · 23/05/2022 12:41

No she puts a full head of foils in (all over the strand of hair) for around 50 mins.
She rinses the back first then the front.
Then she does the toner at the sink followed by hair mask

I've booked in for 3 months time just the t section ( she said as my hair is really thinning )

I started getting balyage instead of all over highlights and my hair has grown past my shoulders for the 1st time ever - the condition has improved so much and I only go twice a year as I do my own toner at home. You might want to try and see if it improves your hair condition.

AWOL66 · 23/05/2022 12:46

My old hairdresser explained you shouldn't ever put bleach on bleach. When doing the roots using foils a tiny bit of bleach will have to overlap onto the last bleached bit but other than that you should avoid it. Are you sure she's brushing the bleach all the way to the end of the hair with the dye brush and not stopping where your roots end? You usually see bits of dry hair flicking out the foils. She might be alternating bleach foils with brown dye foils (to break up the blonde) and the brown dye would be painted all the way to the tips. I thought once it's bleached light enough once you only need to use toner to alter the tone of blonde and to freshen it up if it goes a bit brassy over time.

Tanfastic · 23/05/2022 12:46

Yes it will be the bleach. I used to highlight my own hair with bleach but only used to do the roots. If I'd have done the full length of my hair every ten weeks it would have been like straw.

I stopped using bleach a few months ago and now just put a blonde dye on the roots as I'm so grey which seems a bit kinder to my hair too.

Bakedpotatoesfortea · 23/05/2022 13:16

You should just have the root section bleached, then now usually most people have a toner so would have a toner applied all over afterwards.

If they really are rebleaching bleached hair I am not surprised your suffering from the hair thinning and breaking. Are you sure that is what is happening? If so I would make a complaint

pinkflowersinmyhair · 23/05/2022 14:20

Yeah she's deffo been applying over the full length of hair then applying a toner at the basin

I'd go to another salon in that case as it seems uneccessary provided the ends she's going over are blonde already (as Sofasogood says she may pick out the odd one to do to the tip still but generally it's avoided). You could ask her why to help her out as it seems like she's making the job harder for herself. If you want a laugh at people having real hair disasters using bleach on bleach look at Brad Mondo videos on Youtube!

Change the hairdresser before it's not too late.

Is is the hair colouring or something else? Are you low in iron? Maybe your thyroid could be playing up? Just throwing these thoughts in just in case.
