The events:

  1. I am going to a conference - work related but I'm there in a personal capacity out of interest and don't need to impress anybody. People will be smart casual.
  1. I'm also going to a friend's PhD type symposium (it's something legal I don't entirely understand but I'm coming because he's my friend!) followed by his retirement party at a nice but not super-yacht style marina. Guests will be a mixture of lawyers, ethicists and arty types.

My shape:
High-waisted apple. Size 16-18. 5 foot 6. Flat arse and medium boobs for size.

What I want:
To feel comfortable - that's very important - look smart and neither completely out of touch nor a fashion victim - and be out of my jeans! I do not look good with lines cutting my torso so never wear a top tucked in fully, nor belts etc. i like colour and can happily wear bright red or some yellows. Dresses often look good because they carry the colour down vertically and I wear a long cardigan over to focus on length.

I've found these two options. Basically wearing whole colour (yellow or the blue pattern) and would wear with nice trainers and this jacket: www.mintvelvet.co.uk/products/beige-long-blazer-coat. I think with the yellow I'd have to compromise with a French tuck, but colour would be a vertical.

What do you think? I have no idea any more what looks bad! I do like all the components though..and they look comfortable.

Love the yellow

daretodenim · 20/05/2022 22:36

Me too. Do you think it works with that jacket though?

I agree the yellow is good - the blue is a bit pyjama ish. I don't think beige and yellow go. You need white or blue or navy or a similarly strong contrast.

Love the blue!

TBH I’m quite appley and I don’t think either of those styles would work on me. I’d have to size up so that they fitted me round the waist and that would make them really baggy everywhere else.

I do think that similar, wide legged trousers are the way to go though as they’ll balance out the hips - but personally I’d be looking for some sneaky elastic on the waist. I’m thinking wide-legged trousers, cool trainers and some kind of blazer maybe 🤔

Love the yellow. I think it works with the jacket.

Ooh thanks! The variety of opinions is exactly what I'm flip flopping between so at least that means I'm not completely out of touch with clothing issues! 😅

DontPickTheFlowers - the waist:bum fit is a concern with that outfit. Some elastic around the back of the waist would be lovely too (which makes me realise my grandmother knew what she was doing! 😂).

The blue has an elasticated waist. And I agree with PP they look like PJs, but I'm wondering it that's something I could get away with this year. It looks like it would be a super comfy outfit though! Maybe I need to just try them all on..

Yellow all the way!

rookiemere · 21/05/2022 07:47

The yellow could be lovely- you'd need to try it on. I can't see that jacket working well with it though, in my mind it needs something shorter and boxier.
