Retirement do in a City pub

It's the first of my "peers" from a previous career to retire. There will be lots of people there I haven't seen in years. It's Friday evening after work, so most people will be straight from work, although I imagine many are WFH now.

Back then, dress in this industry was very formal and I wore good quality suits or tailored dresses and heels. I suspect it's far less formal now.

I dress much more casually now and haven't worn heels in years.

My options:

  • A really lovely semi fitted navy dress with either block or stiletto heels. This is the kind of thing I'd have worn to this do "before" but maybe too formal now?
  • A flowy summer dress, colourful, with trainers
  • A column t-shirt dress with trainers
  • Formal/dark wide leg jeans, trainers and some sort of top. Leather jacket
  • More casual bleached wides leg jeans, as above.

My feet are a real mess because I run 100s of miles a month, so no sandals 😆

I think it's forecast to be warm, so maybe not jeans?

Whatever you want really. It's a pub on a Friday night. I'm sure the other clients will include all the options you've listed.

Smartsub · 18/05/2022 15:52

Of course I can wear what I want but the whole style and beauty subject is rather redundant if no one ever wants to share thoughts on the subject

I'd go with flowy summer dress of the options you listed. If I were going to an event like this right now, I'd wear a "midaxi" length dress with hi-tops.

Yes but Friday night drinks in a pub isn't really an occasion on which special advice is needed.

It's a retirement party in a pub. 60 or so people I haven't seen for a decade.

Flowy dress and trainers or the wide leg casual jeans.

I work in the City in London and have been in a few times the last couple of weeks. the whole vibe has changed. So much more relaxed. The stilettos would be out of place for sure, plus who could be arsed!

averythinline · 18/05/2022 16:15

I would go with the flowy summer dress and trainers I think of your options..
Probably not jeans or the more formal dress.... its a do and hour not coming from an office so more casual would be fine...

balalake · 18/05/2022 16:33

A dress with trainers seems ideal, colour is nice as too much black is worn, in my opinion.

CloudPop · 18/05/2022 16:34

I'd go flowery dress if it's nice weather. Agree with you, it's tricky to know what to wear to anything work related now !

VaddaABeetch · 18/05/2022 21:25

Flowy dress.

stillettos are dated now? Plus ouch plus standing in heat in a busy pub double ouch

Triffid1 · 18/05/2022 21:40

Agree flowery dress. T shirt dress as second choice. The city is less formal and especially on Friday.

If.you have alternative shoe options I would.consider it as the trainers with more formal clothes doesn't seem to be as much if a city trend as elsewhere. But I wouldn't be rushing out to buy them if that's what you have.
