Do most men wear suits to weddings?

We have a wedding coming up and DH has just decided his suit trousers don't fit. (after I bought him a shirt to go with said suit). What are blokes wearing to weddings these days? The wedding is in a hotel and I suspect artsy rather than very formal. Can you share ideas please of what he should wear? Our budget is M&S, Next prices. He hasn't got a clue and I'm not much better. He does have a nice blue linen jacket which he usually wears with jeans but not sure whether to try to get something to go with it or start from scratch.

@curlycat I love those checked suits. I haven't heard of Slaters so perhaps they are specific to your area. We're going shopping on Saturday. 🙂

I think Slater's started in Glasgow but they have branches in Scotland and England.
There's a joke about "the Ralphie court suit" or "Ralphie's special" or similar. This is not referring to advocate's blacks or a suit worn by a solicitor but a cheap suit bought specially for a semblance of respectability when up in front of a judge.

If it’s artsy perhaps he could get away with smart chinos with his linen blazer. But generally, I would say most men wear suits with shirt and ties to weddings.

Yes that would be fine.

@KimikosNightmare I wonder who Ralphie was? 😀

Ralph Slater- person who was behind Slater's.

He might find some inspiration on Fashionbeans (it's a men's style and fashion advice site). They'll have some articles/inspo on summer weddings. Chinos + jacket/blazer will work but it needs to be right, and with the right shirt under, otherwise he'll look a bit 'fantasy author at a book signing'.

If the suit that he already has is perfect apart from the trousers not fitting properly perhaps he could have the them altered to fit.

Could you return the £50 shirt? (buy less expensive)

Use funds towards suit? 🙂

Leah2005 · 18/05/2022 20:24

@KimikosNightmare haha I thought it was the first chap up in court in a cheap suit!

@Iknowthis1 I had thought of that - I do sew myself and suggested it but he didn't look thrilled with that idea.
@beetr00 i bought the shirt probably 2 months ago and the twit didn't bother checking the suit still fit so too late to return. I could possibly negotiate with the shop but I honestly can't be arsed due to his planning incompetence.
I've looked at M&S now and there seems to be a good amount less than £200 so he's just going to shell out for a new one. The last couple of suits he's had (other than his cheapo) were nearly £400 if I remember rightly - I didn't want to waste the money if everyone said oh suits are so last year.

@NightmareSlashDelightful haha - he does have a reputation for looking like an antiques dealer off the tv (and that's before he's paired chinos with a linen jacket) so I get your drift.

DH got a nice one from M&S for about £200. Almost navy, linen type but not really crumpled. Worn with shirt, no tie. Quite a few men had ties on but no 3 piece suits.

would suggest moss bross ...for ok suits... sale prices especially good
