Foundation?

I have always worn foundation at least 5 days a week, however I gave up once I started wearing facemasks. Now I feel ready to go back to wearing it but I also let my hair go grey so I'm fairly sure that I need a different shade.

So, do any brands still do tester samples? I used to mostly wear Estée Lauder Double Wear light but I think its been discontinued. In recent years I also experimented with No. 7 (lovely texture, good colour, didn't last full working day) and with Dior (so not worth the money).

What I want now is to try a few different brands, see what colour they recommend for me and test its staying power.

I don't mind paying for good quality makeup but at the same time I can't afford expensive mistakes. Any recommendations/advice would be gratefully received.

BTW my preference is for foundation not BB/CC creams as I like a bit of coverage.

I used to use Doublewear Light and liked it, but now use EL Futurist Hydra Rescue and love it so much more than the old DW Light. It stays on all day but is really fresh and dewy looking - I swear it makes my skin look ten years younger! I also tried the new DW Sheer and it does have good coverage, but I found it v to have a very flat matt finish which is not so flattering on my not so young skin...

The EL Futurist is lovely. All counters do samples if you ask ime.

I have combination skin (more on the oily side than dry) and really love the Armani power fabric foundation, medium coverage, not cheap but worth it. I also really like the ordinary serum foundation which needs building up on my skin but is soooo cheap! X

Right so I'm heading out tomorrow to try for samples of EL Futurist, Armani Power Fabric and The Ordinary. Thanks for the suggestions!
