What do you get "done" professionally / at home?

I've seen older threads for this so thought I'd start up a new one.

What hair and beauty treatments do you pay for to get done professionally, and what do you do yourself? Total cost? And how old are you?

I'm 30.
I think I'm fairly minimal really but thinking of ramping it up now that I'm getting into my 30s.

Currently get my hair cut professionally, no colour. Considering colour but don't want the hassle/cost of the upkeep.
And I've had teeth whitening at the dentist in the past, which I will top up shortly.
And I think that's it when it comes to paying for professional treatments!

Nails I just keep short and paint myself. But considering pedicures.
I do sometimes use fake tan in the summer and I think I'm pretty good at doing it myself, although I am tempted to just go for a spray tan now.
I don't get botox/filler etc, and don't think I ever will (but ask me again in 5 years haha).

Considered eyelash extensions in the past but don't think I'd like the cost/time of the upkeep.

I like to think my hair/beauty regime is fairly low cost. I'm really only paying for a £35 wet cut once every few months.

Home:
Hair colour every 6-8 weeks
Shape and dye eyebrows (otherwise they are virtually invisible)
Shave/ IPL legs, armpits, bikini line (hardly ever need to shave my legs any more thanks to the IPL)
Toenail polish (always have toe nails a bright colour as they're forever bruised because I do a lot of hiking!)
Fingernail polish a neutral colour when I can be bothered (very subtle colour so less noticeable when it starts to chip!)
Sometimes trim own hair and fringe
Face masks, hair masks etc once a month(ish)
'Dermaplaning' using a browzer tool whenever the peach fuzz is getting too noticeable.
I use teeth whitening toothpaste but don't really see that as a beauty treatment

Salon:
Haircut 2/3 times a year, can't afford it more often
Occasional eyebrow threading if they seem to have lost all their shape.

I’m early 40’s, I dye my hair at home and pluck my eyebrows. Once a month a hairdresser cuts my hair at her house. I don’t get anything else done.

I am the most low-maintenance person in my group of friends. The only thing I pay for is cut/colour (which I get for £40 as my friend owns salon). I dread to think what my friends all spend on brows/Botox/pedicures etc. they all look so glam. I just look like a scarecrow!🤣but I’m happy with that!

I pluck my own brows. That’s it.

I fake tan & paint nails when I go out

JW13 · 10/05/2022 21:40

I'm late 30s....

Salon:

Hair - colour every 5 weeks, balayage once a year, cut every 3/4 months.

Nails - gel nails on hands maybe 8-10 times a year depending on holidays/events.

Feet - medical pedicure 4-6 times a year at Margaret Dabbs

Face - I'm getting profhilo and a LVL for the first time this month, occasional hydrafacial/massage.

Spray tan (although get this done at home) - pre-holiday/event maybe 3/4 times a year

Previous - laser hair removal (legs/bikini line/armpits), teeth whitening (a long time ago).

Home:

Hair: conditioning treatments.

Nails - sometimes normal manicure on hands/paint toe nails regularly

Face - face masks, do my own eyebrows.

Body - scrub/shaving

It's expensive being a woman

beautyrookie · 10/05/2022 21:49

Wow, I'm amazed at how many different treatments you all get done.
I'd definitely go to salons more if it wasn't for the fact that there is so much upkeep with treatments. I prefer things where I can get them done once, and not have to go back every few weeks.

I've seen someone post here about lip blushing as well, that is something I've thought about as my lips are full but pale. Not sure if I could stomach having a needle running over my lips though!

This just came in in active so I thought I'd reply. I don't pay for anything. My DP and I cut each other's hair - we started during lockdown and we watched loads of videos. Since my hair is short and needs cutting every 6-8 weeks, it is much nicer to do it at home. I will admit this is a bit niche - for anyone who has longer hair, I'd say the one thing you can't economise on is a good cut.

I don't do anything else. I tan a bit because I work outdoors, but I wouldn't pay for a fake one; I don't whiten my teeth as they're fine. If I want my nails done I do them myself, but I'm lucky mine are strong and grow fast, so I can just buff them and they look nice.

I don't think of myself as being particularly low-maintenance! I'm 37 - I will admit I did more when I was younger, but honestly, there is nothing as ageing as excessive treatments. Fake tan will always look like fake tan; fake eyebrows will always look cheap; whitening your teeth is something a dentist should do, because it can go so badly wrong.

It's only expensive if you choose to do all of that though.

JW13 · 11/05/2022 00:31

@IstayedForTheFeminism

Very true. Until I wrote it down I actually thought I was quite low maintenance (other than my hair, and the regular colour is because I started going grey at 18 and didn't/don't want to go grey yet).

Many I know do much much more - regular Botox/fillers, gel nails or extensions every 3 weeks, micro blading, regular waxing etc.

I also work in a senior role in an industry where most people (women and men) look polished, so there is a certain pressure.

DailySheetWasher · 11/05/2022 00:42

Salon:
Haircut and high/lowlights every 3 months
Botox every 4-5 months

I do everything else at home. I'm pretty good with a skincare routine and try but don't always succeed in keeping up to date with nails and epilating. Apart from occasional teeth whitening and a DIY facial that's about it... my brows and lashes don't need anything really, which helps.

Weatherwax13 · 11/05/2022 01:07

I'm 49. I've had a few professional facials, lashes, tans over the years but don't bother now.
The only things I regularly pay for now are:
.Trim and hair colour every six weeks.
.Wax half leg, underarm and bikini every month with eyebrow shaping.
.Occasional massage, maybe every 3 months.
At home:
.K13 to stop frizzy hair.
.Pretty basic daily cleanse and face/body moisturise routine but I'm religious about it.
.Hand and foot cream every day.
.Very basic weekly mani/pedi/nail polish.
I really can't be bothered with anything else and tbh I find my skin didn't look any better with professional treatment and the thought of laying there getting my lashes done/eyebrows tinted makes me twitchy, don't have the patience nowadays.
It's really the thought of my roots showing that's my main vanity.

DelphiniumBlue · 12/05/2022 17:51

I get a haircut about 3 times a year, which is about 30 pounds a time, and have very occasionally had lowlights to transition to grey, which were about 100 pounds a go.
I do my own nails but not very often. Before Covid I used to get my eyebrows threaded and dyed, but not anymore - I pluck with tweezers and dye them myself, and also dye my lashes.
That's it, I don't do facials or fake tan, or treatments or even waxing, just shave my legs and use either ordinary moisturiser or selftan moisturiser, like Dove.
I use any old handcream, Aldi moisturiser on my face but I do spend on Trinny London BB cream and Protect and Perfect serum.
I have inherited good skin, and never go to spas or massages.
I do eat lots of veg and fruit, and gave up smoking some years ago, which has actually made less difference than I expected to my appearance! I've also avoided getting too much sun for years, and I think it is that which has kept my skin looking good.

Isthatarealname · 13/05/2022 14:19

Salon:
Cut and balayage a couple of times a year, usually another cut or 2 on top of that
Leg wax every 4 weeks
Odd brow wax and tint
Lash lift and tint every 6 weeks
Botox, just started but in theory twice a year
Odd facial
Nails only for occasions.

At home:
Just general skin care
Tan in the summer/when I feel like it
Hair masks

Cost of living crisis means I am going to give up lashes and legs

ZealAndArdour · 13/05/2022 14:33

Salon;

  • Cut, full head of foils, toner and olaplex treatment (but we’re working towards growing my grey out/blending it in, so that I don’t have to have colour appts anymore). Every six weeks or so.
  • BIAB gel on my nails. Every four weeks.
  • Microbladed/tattooed brows (once every three years or so).
  • Botox/Profhilo/Filler. Botox every 4-5 months, Profhilo six months.
Home;
  • Prescription retinoid, twice daily skin care routine.
  • Shaving/Plucking of facial/body hair every other shower usually.
  • Olaplex shampoo and conditioner with treatments every few washes.
  • Also use home toner/blue/purple shampoo to maintain hair colour between salon appts.
  • Look after my own feet/toenails and paint them whenever I get round to it.
Thejugglestruggle · 13/05/2022 14:43

I'm mid 30s...

Professional:
Laser hair removal - though don't need anymore
Hair cut
Hair colour
LVLs
Pedicures

At home:
Manicures - sometimes
Fake tanning - spring/summer

I'd like to start a regular facial when I'm back at work; currently can't justify the spend as I feel I already spend a lot on maintenance (currently on mat leave)
Don't think I need Botox yet - not that anyone needs it but you know what I mean. My mother only started getting wrinkles in mid 40s really, so am hoping that's the same for me 🤣🤞🏼

paisley256 · 13/05/2022 19:42

Professional - balyage twice per year. Hair cut - 4 times per year.

At home - hair toner, shaving, face mask, eyebrows, prescription retinol, nails, the odd fake tan.
