Is there such thing as a stylish sun hat?

In the interest of protecting my skin a bit more I'm after an everyday sun hat.
I have a baseball cap style visor thing for when my hair is in a bun, but I'm looking for something a bit nicer.
Straw hats look too beachy and don't really go with my usual outfit of officewear during the week and leggings and tshirt at the weekend.

I think a fedora or trilby hat works fine, isn't too beachy. Not sure any 'sun' type hat would go with office wear to be honest.

AdaColeman · 06/05/2022 16:29

A boater or a Panama hat can look stylish and not at all "beachy". Wear your hat with verve, and it will look stylish!

BiscuitLover3678 · 06/05/2022 19:14

What’s your face shape? That can also determine what works.

MistySkiesAreGone · 07/05/2022 07:57

Daily sun cream?

balzamico · 07/05/2022 08:02

I have a straw hat that that's a darkish grey which I think looks better than regular straw colour
It was from Accessorise.

I also think you have to get used to seeing yourself in a hat to not feel silly

Notarealmum · 07/05/2022 10:53

A bucket hat! This young woman from Zara likes them so much she’s wearing three. I guess she couldn’t decide on the colour.

Or a subtle cream one....?

I just bought this

Bets are on whether it looks ridiculous or not.

I love a broad brimmed sun hat. They really are the best thing to protect our faces and necks from the ageing effects of the sun. I’d suggest going out and trying lots on. Take a selfie in each one. Then consider them all over a coffee and choose the one you like the best.

I like a big straw hat for beach holidays but what about just out and about or out walking in the summer? I feel silly in anything. Straw trilby just looks daft on me, I don't suit caps. Can't seem to find anything that feels 'me'.

I'm sure hair type and face shape play into all this. I have fine hair so anything that flattens it right down looks odd. Caps make me look like I have no hair!

I bought a dark grey trilbyish hat from accessorize yonks ago - open weave but some kind of synthetic fibre so it doesn't look like straw - more like a fine dense mesh. Just a band, no bows etc - quite 'mannish' I suppose. I don't have an office job but I think it would look great with a suit. So this kind of material / colour www.jdwilliams.co.uk/shop/accessorize-packable-fedora-hat/XU014/product/details/show.action?pdBoUid=3156&optionColour=Khaki&optionSize=SM/MED&promo=6211&cm_mmc=MICROSOFT--JDWilliams--na-_-PRODUCT_GROUP&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&msclkid=fbcf00ca64921b03487762bde9c18266&utm_campaign=PLA%20-%20Bing%20-%20Catch%20All%20-%20Fashion&utm_term=4584413754433801&utm_content=PLA%20-%20Bing%20-%20Catch%20All%20-%20Fashion&gclid=fbcf00ca64921b03487762bde9c18266&gclsrc=3p.ds but slightly more compact, more this shape www.accessorize.com/uk/straw-panama-hat-with-wide-trim-natural-89108011.html

I live in a country where it's advisable to wear a hat for a large part of the year. I was transplanted here from the UK where I never wore a hat, apart from it it was very cold!

I still struggle with the best style of hat to wear, have now got a large collection, but still mostly clueless. I can only recommend that you need more than one hat - ie, visor or baseball style for casual shorts/leggings/t-shirt outfits and a more 'formal' hat for other outfits. It's worth looking at proper panama hats in different colours, or similar types of hats (there are a few from different South American countries). The weaving is really very fine and light, so you get plenty of coverage, without getting too hot under the damned thing.

Bingitty · 09/05/2022 12:45

I have both of these and use whenever it's sunny- including with office wear

Although mine is a different scarf colour in the first one - more a greeny blue.

Mint Velvet one upthread update - would look fab on someone who is not me.

Love the Oliver Bonas ones.

I got this one last week in Asda. They had a grey/black & white version as well. I don't like spending a lot as I always seem to lose them.

Justkoko · 10/05/2022 20:48

That's nice @Playplayaway

I feel too 'grown up' in a proper hat, that's the problem. I'm a jeans and tee kind of person, still a bit of an indie kid at heart, so straw boaters and fedora etc seem to jar with that a bit. I think its why the obvious choice is a bucket hat.

Querty123456 · 10/05/2022 20:52

Yes I need to wear a hat due to previous skin cancer but find it really hard to match one with my usual outfit of trainers/ active wear leggings and a fleece type top. Any suggestions?

midsomermurderess · 14/05/2022 13:44

bucket hat from other stories. It’s simplicity gives it much charm.

Justkoko · 20/05/2022 07:19

I'm thinking something like this, but this is £50 and I'm not up for spending £50 to be honest.
Neutral in colour, but not camel/beige, maybe khaki or washed black or something. nice shape. Can throw in a bag without worrying it'll get squished.
Can anyone find this?

ASOS has loads of different coloured bucket hats. I'd try there.
