Flattering shorts

I'm 40, size 10-12, quite slim overall but a bit of an apple shape, slender hips and fairly toned legs. I used to live in shorts but I'm very conscious of dressing like a 20 year old when I'm double that age and have 3 kids.

I've tried a couple of chino shorts from Next and they were massive and frumpy. I really don't know what to look for.

Any advice for me? Thank you!

I've always gone to a denim short, if you have nice legs why not get them out? There's a mom jeans short at m+s I basically lived in last summer, the higher waist balances out them being fairly short. Personally I've never found Chino shorts flattering as they always seem to crease in weird places!

Forget how old you are and how many children you have.

Personally I think all shorts look better if they're quite short, knee-length make you look even bigger IMO and any shorts that sit fitted on the thigh. I think if you have decent legs then you should go for something quite short but with some room in the leg.

I've seen these Zara ones on people (with a different belt) and they look fab.

The M&S mom ones are a lovely shape but I personally don't like the frayed ends. Tesco have a similar pair but are hemmed and I'd prefer them.
