Where do people get nice tops for jeans now?

I could really do with some nice new tops but can’t find much that is loose, hangs nice and long enough to cover my tummy-why is everything cropped!!
oasis used to be my go to but there’s nothing that’s jumping out. I’m underwhelmed by the Next options too. Mango, crap. Few possibilities in New Look but have to sift through the crop tops and teenage type stuff lol.
any recommendations?

As a brief online buying guide, is it simply
*Polyester and viscose = non breathable and bad
*Cotton and natural fibres = good?
Or should cotton tshirts/ tops have a little mix of something else to retain shape?
And what about tencel which I'm seeing on clothing increasingly?

Really depends on your requirements. I don't wear polyester because I take the tube almost daily and it's boiling. But I can see why people like it because no ironing and does not fade, plus all the trendy brands- Hush, Whistles- are almost all polyester. Viscose and tencel far more breathable but they crease a lot.

I like 95% cotton with 5% elastane but it's very hard to find. I also like cotton linen mix in summer.

I'm glad it's not just me! Really struggling to find anything, everything is too short!

I went to a 'styling' event a few months back and the women running it, who to be fair had lots of lovely clothing suggestions, were adamant that you have to tuck in at the front.

The argument being that pulling a long top down over your belly just makes it look bigger whereas a 'French tuck' is more flattering. I'm yet to be convinced!!!

I like Hush or Mint Velvet if more mainstream shops, or else indie boutiques usually have some nice bits. Recently discovered The Walk In Wardrobe walkinwardrobeonline.com/collections/tops and they really nice tops and blouses that are a bit different and not cropped!

I have a 'go to' t shirt from zara that I can dress up with black jeans and a necklace and a cropped cardigan or leather jacket.
It's the leopard print one but they have some others too.

I Bought this one in a haul of 5. This was actually the one I liked least on the website but it was actually much nicer when it arrived and one of the two I kept.

These are really nice. What's the sizing like?

Herbarium · 05/05/2022 14:29

I agree with pp who said Hush quality is dreadful, even though the tops/tees look lovely when first on.

I can actually report that the v neck long sleeve tees from fatface wash and wash perfectly and are a good, non transparent cotton. Was surprised at how goo they were.

I would advise against buying tees from fashion-y stores like H&M, Next, etc, they are thin as tissue, usually quite transparent and wash dreadfully, losing shape quickly.

Can also rate the quality of the Toast long sleeve tshirt, but to be honest at over £60 it isn't remotely better than the fatface one.

Also recommend White Company and Poetry for very decent quality tees. Pricey though. There are some longer length tshirts, vests and other tops at Wrap London, again a bit pricier than fatface!

I’m not impressed with Hush, I bought a few items last summer and quality isn’t any better than TU or Next, I’m not paying £35 for a tshirt that I can buy elsewhere for £10.

I popped into TKMAX this afternoon and picked up a couple T-shirts, they had a few Boden Basic T-shirts for £9.99 each, also got a few basic tops in Next for around £10 each.

Springandsummerarecoming · 05/05/2022 16:18

I just brought some from SHEIN but they aren’t long enough really so wouldn’t recommend them. However freeman’s is popping up on my Facebook feed and they look nice. I may try them and see if they happen to cover the tummy area!

There is no way my c section overhang is ever getting put on show deliberately 😆 - I could never be convinced that it a better option!

Sorry just catching up - thanks for all the suggestions. Lots to look at! I love that oasis top-probably because that’s what I’m used to and it’s my safe choice! Out of stock in my size though 😔

to answer an earlier question about my shape, I’m short and quite busty, flabby belly hence want it covered but don’t mind arms and shoulders on show.

I think it has a bit of an old lady reputation but I found a couple of tops that suit me in Edinburgh Woollen Mill.
I also like White Stuff, stuff!
