Holiday spf … ultra sun or Malibu?

No3No2No1 · 27/04/2022 20:50

Have a sun holiday booked in July with 17yo ds. It will be hot and ds is determined to tan so I need a spf50 for us. but I’ll be spending more time in the shade

Would a cheaper all day spf protect as well as something like altrasun? I mentioned malibu as they do a clear spray. I’d reapply it during the day but wouldn’t have to do it every 2 hours.

We use the calypso once a day stuff for the whole family, similar to P20, from B&M. Its around a fiver a bottle. Usually top up mid way through the day. I burn easily but never have using this

IggyAce · 27/04/2022 20:59

Malibu is rubbish, I can recommend calypso it’s one of the only ones that doesn’t irritate my ds eczema.

belephant · 27/04/2022 21:05

I've never used Malibu but all I can say is I'm an absolute ultrasun devotee, I've personally never found a sunscreen that has worked so well for keeping me unburnt!

Deathraystare · 30/04/2022 12:25

Ultrasun is very good but not cheap. I would not go for Malibu if you value your skin! Boots and Superdrug's own are also rated highly. Just make sure they say UVA as well as UVB!

chipsandpeas · 30/04/2022 12:30

the calypso once a day is just as good as ultrasun imo but very much cheaper

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 30/04/2022 12:33

Ultrasun is amazing if in budget. I don’t find it needs to be reapplied every couple of hours either (unless in and out of the pool/sea). DH and the children are pale skinned redheads who burn as soon as temps hit double figs in the UK and have very sensitive skin in terms of eczema type reactions, US is the only one they can use that doesn’t exacerbate that side of things. The sprays, especially the clear ones are a nightmare for it because they are often so high in alcohol.

StridTheKiller · 30/04/2022 12:43

Calypso.

maryandtrees · 30/04/2022 18:01

Ultra sun is all we use but I do reapply after lunch. Keep an eye on QVC for good deals.

Bickles · 30/04/2022 18:03

Ultrasun spf 30 and reapply after lunch works for us.

KnitPurlKnitPurl · 30/04/2022 18:11

Aldi. Their Lacura sunscreen is 5* rated and £3 a bottle. Spray, sensitive, whatever.

Malibu is 4* rated, as is Nivea.

The Aldi stuff is really very good and my very white skinned children with red hair have not burned using it.

earsup · 30/04/2022 18:14

aldi or lidl stuff is good...malibu range now in poundland...have used it as dont burn and its ok.....

GlamGiraffe · 30/04/2022 18:22

We've used piz buin once a day for years. Spf30 is very ptotective. I couldn't get it it last year so dont know if irs still available but it has been better than anything else for us (and my easily burnt hysband). I do think its important to really slap the single application ones on very liberally and make sure you allow it to soak right in at least 20mins before you leave the room.

Abraxan · 30/04/2022 18:28

We always use ultra sun. It's expensive but it works. It's also, in my experience, truest once a day even in hot humid climates. Without sun cream I burn quickly and badly. I've never had any issues with ultra sun and don't top up during the day. Dh and Dd do sometimes if they've spent a lot of time in the sea/water and towel dried, but often don't bother.

YayitisfinallySpring · 30/04/2022 18:57

Altruist from Amazon is the best. It's factor 50. Allergen free and so cheap. I use it everyday as I've had skin cancer in my face, caused by sunbathing. Two tubes for just over £10.

gunnersgold · 30/04/2022 19:21

I use p20 and never burn but you must stick to the instructions . I'm very fair though .

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 01/05/2022 11:19

I like P20’s protection but the yellowing of everything in sight is too much for me
