How does your teenage boy have his hair. Need ideas

Cacti82 · 23/04/2022 19:30

My ds 15 has shoulder length hair which is wavy and wears in a pony tail/bun thing. He feels ugly he says :-( and is asking me things like will he ever get a girlfriend :-( he is lovely looking but of course he won't listen from me, I know hair isn't necessarily going to change how he feels within himself but we need some ideas. He's not into looking ultra trendy, that's not him. I have no idea what kind of hair cuts are 'in' now.

Thanks in advance!

This type of thing known as a skin fade is what the majority of teenagers have.

I have 2 boys one is 20 and as above re skin fade is what my eldest has, my 17 year old doesn’t go to skin and his is kinda long & messy at the front. It’s a bit short just now and he’s not happy. Teens are so self conscious about their look and if people like them. I have a lovely, gorgeous 17 year old who just can’t see it. He really is a good looking lad but second guesses himself constantly. He rarely goes out and really has to be pushed. Has friends and a girl who likes him but just getting him to put himself forward a bit is all but impossible at times.

im sure your lad is lovely op, does he like his hair? Sounds like it’s quite trendy but maybe look online at styles see what he fancies if anything. I hope things improve as they just don’t want to listen to old mum (In my case - I’m just sooooo uncool)

britespark1 · 23/04/2022 21:35

I could have written your post OP! My 11 year old DS has shoulder length, beautiful blond hair and wants it cut before he starts high school in September. Hasn’t a clue how he does want it and I have no ideas either!

Poppiesway1 · 23/04/2022 21:37

My ds had almost shoulder length hair and then had it cut short. He was then devastated he had it cut.. It’s now back to ear lobe level. He likes to “hide” behind his long fringe..
would he have it slightly longer like jack grealish? That’s quite popular here.. long on top and faded in back.

It's so sad isn't it when they're so critical of themselves isn't it.. I wouldn't say my sons hair is trendy, he's not style conscious at all. He's started to put it up as it was getting in his eyes. He just hated having his hair cut so haven't been for so long.

I wonder if he may regret it if he has it cut but he has so much hair and he can't see when he's working now or in PE unless he ties it back. I'll look at Jack Grealish hair, thank you! I think long hair is quite nice on boys but I think he thinks it may lessen his chances of getting a GF!!

My son has a skin fade with quite a sharp line.

Ahh, bless him. My sons was short when he started secondary and it's gradually grown!

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 23/04/2022 22:11

DS1 (17) has,I guess it's a traditional short back and sides. But dyed pink/green/half each.

DS2 (15) had his hair cut from half way down his back to ear length. It's now at his collar.

Neither are remotely bothered about fashion or anything.

NotMeNoNo · 23/04/2022 22:13

My ds had outgrown shoulder length hair, I took him to my hairdresser and got one of their young stylists to trim it into a style while keeping the length. He now has a trim a couple of times a year. Might that be an option?

Several of DS’s friends - and their older brothers - are currently sporting mullets. Proper, deliberate mullets.

apparently it’s a good look. 🤷🏻‍♀️

BoardingSchoolMater · 23/04/2022 22:18

I have canvassed opinion among my DC and curtains are apparently the thing, OP.

The picture that JaneJeffers posted is what I call the 'cowpat on the head' haircut. Apparently nobody at DD's school has that kind of hair, but lots of boys in nightclubs do.

My DD said that mullets are very "in" among the boys in the sixth form at her school. <boak> I didn't believe her until I saw it with my own eyes. I wouldn't encourage your DS to go down that route, though.

Omg funny you say that but passed the local butchers the other day and 2 of the young men both had mullets, had to double take!!

Ah, curtains! Went to Urban Outfitters with my dd the other day and it was like going back to the 90s, only natural the hair is coming back too! Blimey...I'm thinking of boyzone and the 90s pop bands!

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 23/04/2022 22:35

Can I recommend he watches this chap on YouTube, there are a lot of very grown out hairstyles from lockdown that he reshapes. www.youtube.com/c/RegalGentleman/videos

My two sons have very different hair, one is super straight haired which is very thick, he is 16 and has a sweeping fringe. The other is 19 and has loose curly hair if he let it grow. It just used to be a bit wavy but has got more curl to it as he has got older. He never really liked his hair until loads of his mates were all running their hands through it due to how thick it was and wavy and wishing they had hair with texture.

Both of mine have had stages of having longish hair and then cut. Both of them now have short back and sides but have never had a fade, firstly school had a policy of not shorter than a number 2 anyway but it never appealed to them.

TimeforaGandT · 23/04/2022 22:38

Curtains here too

DrRuthGalloway · 23/04/2022 22:39

Yep longer hair at the back and sides is in at the minute. My DS 18 has grown his and it's now shoulder length at the back and sides. Most of the kids at his college seem similar. V short haircuts mostly in younger lads. Ds15 has a similar cut. Eldest DS (21) hasn't had a haircut in 6 years and has waist length thick tresses.

Nelliephant1 · 23/04/2022 22:46

Two of my boys have waist length hair. The fade is just a trend as spikey hair was years ago. Encourage him to be himself and have what he likes not what's in vogue at any given time.

100problems · 23/04/2022 22:50

My DS and his friends all have this sort of forward mullet. In the 80's it would've been permed but thank God they haven't cottoned on to that.

I'm waiting for the Sun In phase.

Most of my daughters male friends seem to have hair styles similar to this

100problems · 23/04/2022 22:56

Yep! That's it!! Bang on.

100problems · 23/04/2022 22:58

Just add ear pods to that photo and id yell at it the excavate the dirty pants from its room.

Ducksurprise · 23/04/2022 23:05

Faqs has it, it is either the llama look or a full mullet, often with the hair below the neck dyed blonde.

Imo hair has become like trainers, it aligns you with a certain group in senior school, it probably varies by region but here skin fades are for the lads that hang out at the bus station vaping, mullets are for the cock sure jocks, longer but styled roughly are for the skater kids and then letting your hair be itself is the not cool but not uncool kids, and then the looks like it's done by your mum, standard brushed short hair is the uncool kids.

Above sounds harsh, and ridiculous but it seems to be a thing.

Harpydragon · 23/04/2022 23:06

My 17 year old ds has long thick curly hair (think Robert Plant) He loves it and gets shed loads of compliments, especially from girls/women. He loves his hair, it looks fab and is very him.
Your d needs to find something he is confederation with, be it long or short!

I have 5 and 8yo girls, so can offer nothing practical to this thread unfortunately OP (just here to see what The Yoot are up to these days and just how out of touch I am). However, if I had a teen with a mullet, I would be blasting this out every morning at breakfast:
