Why are dresses and skirts always shit quality?

I've gone all over for this, high end, high street, ethical, etc.
It's either Toast and Plumo (not for me) or nothing in terms of decent fabric and fit.

If I wear leggings, leisurewear, outdoor stuff I can find good quality, but not dresses or skirts. I stopped wearing jeans and trousers yrs ago because I don't feel good in them, and have had a difficult time sourcing anything alternative to them. I don't want to shop at Baukjen for eco vero patterned trend stuff, nor do I like much viscose (Hush, higher high st, etc).
Am I destined back into my yoga gear due to frustration?
I mean, why not?

I like the idea of having very few items but very good quality and function, but I don't like utilitarian clothes. Most trend stuff is out, so what am I left with if I want an easy life?
Sweaty Betty? Fjallraven? Aagggh!

I've read post after post of recommendations for dresses here over the past few years and I don't like any of them. I guess I would like a fabulous black dress (for an occasion) and maybe two decent strappy ones for summer.

Anyone had this issue with quality and shit trends and just gave up, went back to lockdown casual?

Arket? Cos?

BakeOffRewatch · 22/04/2022 19:54

What do you want and I can suggest brands? You’ve said what you’re not happy with, but what style of dresses do you want?

Assuming cotton fitted dresses here are some starters:
thevampireswife.com/collections/dresses (expensive but available on discount sites and sample sale)
www.manonandrose.com/collections/frontpage
daydress.co.uk/collections/the-dresses

I am a big fan of Boden 100% cotton dresses as come with lining.

Cos for an occasion structural black dress? www.cosstores.com/en_gbp/search.html?q=Black+dress

My occasion black dress is the All Saints Swinton, can get on eBay. My one has sleeves www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284755966406

DVF (loads on the OUTNET, Jeanne two on eBay) , Assoulin, McCartney for black dresses too.

Hope that helps. My friend is really in to amazing 100% cotton or wool knit dresses from small brands so can ask her too. This page suggests other brands a-littlebird.com/fashion-and-beauty/the-vampires-wife-dress-for-less/

If you follow looks you like on Instagram, adjacent brands are then suggested to you.

What's your budget?

Herbarium · 22/04/2022 19:57

Thank you both for the suggestions. I appreciate you taking the time to find links and so on very much :)

I wonder if I am just not a dress person? I never like them, but maybe it is current availability that puts me off.
I do feel comfier in dresses as opposed to trousers/jeans, but always feel off. I dont think I suit patterns much either, but then I hate monochrome.
I am a difficult customer!

I do think that most dresses available currently are thin, usually unlined and not that well thought out. It's such a shame as I love the idea of a perfect dress.

@Skinterior Budget is flexible, to a point. I don't buy many clothes so can stretch a bit. Got a few from ebay as prefer older quality but I still look like an overwhelmed curtain at a jumble sale.

I've seen so many unique and high quality brands on here and never like the styles.

can't we quote posts anymore? What has MN done to the interface??!! I can't even find the 'shame' smiley!

So it’s style as well as quality? What do you imagine when you say “fabulous black dress”?

BakeOffRewatch · 22/04/2022 20:11

Sounds like you hone in on leisurewear, I love this brand, they do clothes “for everything”, started as clothes appropriate for yoga and work, their dresses are nice www.thisisaday.com/collections/jumpsuits-dresses-more

You could try:

NRBY (lots of linen) nrbyclothing.com/collections/dresses

Wool& (merino options)
wooland.com/collections/all-merino-wool-dresses

LilySilk (silk dresses)
www.lilysilk.com/uk/women/apparel/dresses.html

@BakeOffRewatch ooh i think something like Clemence Poesy might wear, in the film 'the ones below'. Or in general, we have a similar-ish look and figure.
It would be for certain occasions, not around town sort of thing.
