Mustard yellow top with which colour trousers?

So I’ve learned from here that colour shouldn’t be paired with black. I’m trying to see what works in my wardrobe and have a decent mustard shell top that I thought was fine for work - but i can’t think what to pair it with.

Shall I just donate it? Can’t wear jeans or trainers to work, and black trousers look very bland.

Colour is fine with black.

Stop following 'rules' made up by people who have no idea what they are talking about and just put things on and look in the mirror, see if they look OK. Stylish people have no rules anyway, they have style so do not need rules.

If it looks a bit 'bland' IMO that is fine for work, it is only work.

Of course you can wear it with black, ignore the "advice"!

Navy is good also, or certain shades of brown can work really well too.

Mustard is a great colour and very flexible, blues, greys, browns, greens, a well as a nice block colour to be paired with a multi coloured item.

I don't wear black, I think black bottoms with coloured tops make me look like a star trek extra!

Mustard and black is a fantastic colour combination. My uber stylish near lu17 year old wears it a lot but also mustard and white for summer or mustard and denim works too.

Similar with interior design, you rarely see rooms decorated in black and mustard. It’s basic colour theory.

A brighter blue than navy is also nice, or dark green.

I'm surprised no-one has suggested white. Otherwise wear want you want, the whole point of black is to make bright colours pop

No, this is nonsense IMO - you rarely see rooms decorated with black full stop, black is a very uncommon colour in interior design.

Black is a very common colour for clothes.

Royal blue would look terrific with mustard.

I love mustard. It doesn’t help your question about work but I have mustard jumpers/cardis which I think look great with mid blue or pale denim. I also (equally unhelpful) love wearing them with a bottle green leather skirt.

Well my lounge is grey, with mustard accents! Sitting here in MY mustard T shirt, and navy jeans. Mustard with bottle green reminds me of The Brownies!!

I only learnt this 'rule' recently on here too. I have several pairs of pink trousers that I'd been wearing with black tops and now I know everyone was looking at me the whole time thinking 'what a loser!'

Anyway, I second pairing a mustard top with brown. You would look a bit brownie-esque but in a good way, I think.

Mustard is practically the family colour in my family - 6 of us were together the other day and 3 of us were wearing mustard. My favourite combination is with brown - cropped checked trousers, slim checked cigarette pants but I wear with anything from dark green, navy, indigo, grey, teal and black. For context I have a mustard parka, and (brighter) mustard trench so for half the year I’m in mustard.

What do you wear with black then? White? I always feel like a waitress if I do
