Why not bright colours with black

Could someone explain why this is a rule I see on Instagram? If you care about such things, what colour tops are deemed appropriate for wearing with eg black wide-leg trousers?

(Asking out of interest only, it won’t stop me wearing bright pink with black)

I’m a jewel winter too. Plenty of neutrals which aren’t khaki and brown in the winter pallette. All shades of cool grey right up to charcoal, navy, stone, even taupe. They can be good alternatives to black and I also look out for the darkest of the colours too, so darkest green, darkest burgundy. They can be great neutrals and alternatives to black and worn with the brighter version of themselves can look amazing.I do wear black but not really with brights, I think it looks classier with darker colours like burgundy, navy or dark green

@RampantIvy

With black I would wear grey, caramel, cream and other muted toning shades.

Those colours make me look washed out. I sometimes wear black trousers, a black T shirt and a raspberry red jacket or emerald green cardigan. I always get complimented when I wear those colours.

I am a jewel winter and can carry that off though. Sludgy colours don't suit me at all.

I’m a jewel winter and sludgy or yellow tones are horrible on me but I can wear white, silver grey and some off whites. I wouldn’t wear black trousers/skirt with jewel tops as i think it can look cheap and black isn’t a default that goes with everything. I’d wear aubergine, forest green, dark navy, charcoal, teal or whatever for a dark staple with a jewel shirt or sweater or a complementary strong colour.

I,m wearing black and white today but won't be waiting at any tables 😀

The colours in the shops seem quite muted

It’s hard! I like the idea of the dark colours you mentioned @PinkTonic but realistically finding a pair of black trousers to fit me for work is a challenge, let alone something in a specific shade like aubergine.

I suppose that’s where people interested in ‘style’ who hunt things down part ways with the average punter like me. And probably why I’m not on Instagram!

I have black work trousers and culottes but I wear them with black and white, pale grey or ivory. Dark navy is easy and looks better than black with bright colours in a patterned shirt for instance. I like Boden Richmond trousers for work and have various colours but I appreciate that style and beauty may be a tad sniffy about them.

I find trousers difficult as they are often uncomfortable and Boden were no good on me or Seasalt

M&S Per Una used to be good on me but the colour choices are so limited and per una is very much diminished

Oooh yes, forgot aubergine, aubergine and raspberry / emerald green are also yummy together! I get the resentment against khaki and brown but they work for me as neutral colour bottom pieces (unfortunately suffer from the same mn tan boots and camel coats a session too!) . Actually you know, getting inspired by nature has been for me a great way to find colours that work well together. Raspberry and khaki are on an apple, and green and navy are echoed in forests and lakes :) just love colours and kind of detest black except an obligatory lbd

*obsession, not a session..
