Wearing sun protection under makeup - how do you do it??

iloveruby · 10/04/2022 20:23

I really need to start wearing SPF more but was wondering how to wear makeup over it? All the moisturisers with SPF in that I've tried don't work with foundation!

Also, how do you reapply the sunscreen over makeup? Or, will I just need to leave it? All the sunscreen I've seen says it needs reapplying regular.

(If it snows tomorrow blame me for all this SPF / sunshine talk)

I use my regular moisturiser then P20 face sunscreen. It's meant to last all day. It works well under make up too.

Roseglen84 · 10/04/2022 20:28

I use a lightweight one - La Roche Posay anthelios 50+. I leave it absorb in for about 5 mins and then apply makeup.

Aworldofmyown · 10/04/2022 20:30

La Roche Posay do a spray that goes over your make up. Also No 7 face moisturisers all have SPF 15.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 10/04/2022 20:30

I’ve started using Keihls ultra face cream (spf 30). I really like it.

If it was super sunny or I was on holiday I’d use proper facial suncream - garnier super uv spf 50 is quite good. Pretty similar to La roche posay but much cheaper.

I generally use a moisturiser with SPF in it - currently just a nivea one but have used various other brands. I don't like others not because of the SPF but because they're not moisturising enough. I also have SPF in my foundation.

I do find the Body Shop ViT C SPF good - I've often used that as a moisturiser on its own but my skin is very dry so it's not something I can use daily. But it works well under make up too.

I use the cerave day moisturiser with spf in it, I've had no problems with it under my make up. Its reasonably priced too!

I LOVE the CeraVe body moisturiser and have been thinking about trying the face one. Is that the one with Hylaronic Acid? Is it very hydrating?
moonbedazzled · 10/04/2022 20:54

I use Altruist face fluid SPF 50. I often put my serums on and then I use the spf as the occlusive rather than a moisturiser. Leave it 10 minutes then apply primer etc. It's never pilled.

Ghostlyglow · 10/04/2022 21:00

I use altruist over moisturiser then Trinny BFF and it's fine

Userss88 · 10/04/2022 21:08

@BlingLoving I love cerave too, I use lots of their stuff. It really agrees with my skin, this is the spf one I use. I usually order from look fantastic, they do 22% off for teachers and other key workers.

Moisturiser
Then le rochay posey spf 50 (moisture one)
Then foundation

I find it works like a primer, I have 'normal' skin so I quite like the dewy look it gives

I don't normally reapply during the winter months
But if I have been in the sun a lot (I wear hats in summer) but those sunny spring days then I usually reapply and then put abit more foundation on just before the school run at 3

I did use boire water essence which I adored and it made my skin look lovely, it looked like a primer tbh
But I'm really concerned about fakes so don't use it every day

I used to use sun beds when I was younger so I feel I have a lot of damage to counter act

Also I double cleanse to make sure it's all off at nighttime

Northernsoullover · 10/04/2022 21:16

I use No7 protect and perfect spf50. My foundation goes over it perfectly.

Carbiesdreamhouse · 10/04/2022 21:18

I use ulatrsun face underneath. But if I was on holiday or out in the garden and getting a lot of sun I'd just use the spf and cover with a light dash of powder and then reapply the spf as and when needed - you do need to reapply once a day ones if you sweat etc so it's a good idea to reapply a few times if you're out in the sun a lot. Obviously wear a hat too!

Saltyquiche · 10/04/2022 21:21

Ultrasun sports spray or face cream. Lasts all day so I wear it under makeup

cigarettesNalcohol · 10/04/2022 21:28

Invest in a good spf. Moisturisers with spf in them don't give enough protection.

Evy mouse factor 50 is amazing - lasts 8 hours too. Lightweight, no white cast, antioxidants, vit c, makes my skin all lovely and dewy. A little goes a long way but I use more of it in summer as obviously the sun is harsher (I wear it all year round come may what). Wait a few minutes for it to absorb and then apply make up. Never cakes or peels. It's been a game changer for my skin and well worth the money.

In high summer, I sometimes top up once during the day with an spf spray from La Roche Posay to make sure I have enough protection.

However I don't always do this as I find that the Evy mousse has always been enough. Never had a red face at the end of day, even when only applied once in the morning. If I was at the beach or a festival in full summer sun between 11 - 2pm for example, then maybe I'd top up with a spray but nowadays I do that less and less as I fully trust the Evy mousse. LOVE it!

thefootballcoacheswife · 10/04/2022 21:31

Glowscreen tinted SPF 50. It's a bit on the greasy side but I quite like the dewy look, so fine for me.

cigarettesNalcohol · 10/04/2022 21:33

Should add - the Evy technology mousse is a Swedish spf developed for professional athletes training outside all day so if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me!

PragmaticWench · 10/04/2022 21:35

No moisturiser with spf will give you enough protection, you need a dedicated spf 50 product. I use Bioderma or Biore Watery Essence every day, all year. You should put your spf onto skin first for it to work properly.

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 10/04/2022 21:38

I like Simple sun protection oil. Leave it to sink in and apply make up afterwards.

Gwenhwyfar · 10/04/2022 21:40

Never had this problem. Put sun cream on then put makeup on. What do you mean when you say it doesn't work for you?

My problem is how to re-apply once I've put makeup on.

hihellohihello · 10/04/2022 21:46

I use Ultrasun. It lasts 6 hours so if you time it right you might not need to reapply (check UV forecast). I put a tinted pressed powder over it. I conceal with a mineral powder over this if needed. If I do need to reapply I just wash my face (leave eye makeup on as I wear uv protective sunglasses outside when uv is high) and reapply with a quick powder over the top. I would do this at lunchtime if out all day.

I've used both the tinted La Roche Posay Anthelios Face & Eyes Sunscreen Spf 50+( amzn.to/3JsslZu ) and the regular un-tinted one (amzn.to/3LXaAU2). They work great. I prefer the tinted one myself because I feel it gives me a dewy finish. But not greasy. I find the key is to really blend it in first and let it soak in for 10-15 mins before putting your makeup on. I have a Heliocare one that pulls up under foundation so don't use it much.

Wagsandclaws · 11/04/2022 12:25

I use Rosalique colour correcter, it's green but goes on looking slightly tanned - it's a colour corrected, primer and spf 50 all-in-one. Honestly it's amazing.

I then when my makeup is finished spray garnier ambre solaire over makeup super uv spray to give me a bit of extra protection.

I use retinol so need to make sure that my skin is throughly protected.
