Dying ginger hair blonde?

Is it possible to do this with a home dye kit? Anyone tried it?
My hair is dark ginger, so not super bright but I am not sure if it would be a disaster!

You'd need to bleach it first

justthecat · 10/04/2022 16:51

Agree with poster above I had to have mine bleached and if there is such I had to have a stronger bleach and my hair isn’t too dark . Unfortunately the grey has taken over now 🤨

TheBeesKnee · 10/04/2022 16:55

You'd need bleach and I strongly recommend not bleaching your hair at home as someone who had cotton wool fried hair for years as it grew out.

I recommend you make a colour consultation with a hairdresser, it's really not worth trying it at home. You will need to bleach, which is best left to professionals. They will monitor it whilst it's lifting and maybe tone it afterwards.

Thanks all, I thought that might be the case 😫

I'm naturally ginger but have had my hair blonde for years. Even some hairdressers couldn't cope with changing the colour successfully- it's turned green, broken off and just looked awful. My current hairdresser understands what to do with it and my hair is in great condition- most people don't even realise it isn't natural! Please don't try it at home, it is unlikely to end well..

If your hairdresser is anywhere near Edinburgh please let me know!

Sorry, I'm right on the South Coast- probably couldn't get further away from you!

Why? I love ginger hair. It’s fab.

LizBennet · 11/04/2022 19:54

I do my own (naturally brunette).
I bleach first (now obviously just the roots) and then use a blonde dye. I put a toner on every 6 weeks. My hair isn't wrecked, but there wasn't much damage before hand tbh.

I love it too! I just fancy a change.
