Brogues?

I'm thinking of trying a pair instead of wearing trainers.

Can anyone recommend comfortable non clumpy ones?

I had a pair from clarks and they were very comfortable. As comfortable as trainers although I couldn't have run in them. I think they were called sharon noel, strange combination of two middle aged names there!

TheChattyRat · 10/04/2022 10:11

Rogue Matilda do nice ones though quite spendy

evilharpy · 10/04/2022 10:19

Clarks Hamble Oak are nice.

WildFlowerBees · 10/04/2022 10:28

I was looking at the Clark's Hamble oak, wondering if the heel is a bit high?

I like these from the White stuff but reviews aren't great. I like them because they're pretty much flat.

I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/white-stuff-thistle-leather-lace-up-brogues-light-pink/p5923680?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

Not the Hamble Oak?

No, I just had a look at that one. The ones I had more of a solid foamy wedge base.

I have several pairs of Hamble Oaks, abs would not describe them as high at all.

BattledoreAndShuttlecock · 10/04/2022 10:38

I like brogues but from a fashion POV (if you happen to care) I think they've had their moment and loafers are this year's choice.

NewYearEveryYear · 10/04/2022 10:38

I can confirm that the wedgy ones above were super comfortable on my narrow feet (and I wear the outside of my heel, rather than inside if that helps). Probably more comfortable than Hamble Oaks.

I did donate them to charity though as I bought them as an emergency shoe purchase, and the style really isn't 'me' at all. I just couldn't see what I'd wear them with and have a mortal distaste for wedges.

I've also had Hamble Oaks and wore them into the ground. Great shoes.

absolutelynotfabulous · 10/04/2022 10:43

Hamble Oaks are not high but I personally find that they're not particularly comfortable to wear for eg walking distances.

My most comfortable brogues are from fitflop - light, supportive and comfortable. I wear them loads.

My go to comfy albeit cheap and cheerful ones are from Shoezone. Like DMs only (far) cheaper. I jazz them up with coloured laces.

Floisme · 10/04/2022 10:46

Hamble Oaks are my staples but, if I had either the budget or the discipline to save up, I'd like some Joseph Cheaney's.

I've worn brogues on and off for decades and was a bit pissed off when they became fashionable because trends always move on, as Battledore correctly points out. But now they're off the high fashion radar, I'm hoping things will return to normal.

Nnique · 10/04/2022 10:50

Hamble Oaks are lovely, look great and comfortable. But they’re not going to feel like a trainer. They’re not high - they’re about an inch heel, maybe very slightly more, which is actually the optimum height for being good for your feet IIRC.

WildFlowerBees · 10/04/2022 11:25

@Floisme do you find them true to size? Love the Cheaney brogues. I'm tempted by the patent Hamble oak but also don't want to look as though I should be at school.

I have scholl brogues. They're gold and light brown (non-metallic gold) so a bit more interesting than the usual. I paid £14.99 at TKMaxx. Can't link because my fire won't do it.

Nnique · 10/04/2022 11:47

@Floisme I’ve learnt over the years not to look at brands you mention as I know I’m going to want them! Grin I am terrible at saving too. There’s always something I ‘must have’ this week/month/year.

hedwigismyowl · 10/04/2022 12:56

I needed some comfortable shoes for work and got some from the children's section which goes up to a size 7.

I didn't want hamble oaks cos I'd read they make a noise when you walk and I needed silent ones.

These are the ones I got and they're so comfy!

I have Clarks Hamble Oak in navy patent leather. True to size. Relatively comfortable. Didn’t notice the heel until you mentioned it! I wear them with wide leg trousers for work. I like them but I think I prefer chunkier brogues tbh.

Apologies for late reply, I didn't see this yesterday. Yes I find Hambles true to size. I also like them because they come in two width fittings - I have disproportionately narrow feet - and a D works best.

Sorry Nnique Grin

Salacia · 11/04/2022 16:00

I love my Cheaney’s if you can stretch - they’re usually around 100-150 in the outlet section of their website. The most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned (I’ve done 40,000 steps + on city breaks before without any discomfort whatsoever) whilst looking great. They often have interesting leathers as well as more traditional. Service has always been brilliant too. I’ve got a bit of a collection from there now Blush - really rate their boots as well! For high street hamble oak have been the best I’ve found.

nearlyspringyay · 11/04/2022 18:02

I love my many pairs of hamble oaks for work, but they're not comparable to a trainer

Nnique · 11/04/2022 18:04

Yeah that is definite true. They don’t feel like trainers at all, so it depends on what you mean by ‘comfortable’.

Nnique · 11/04/2022 18:04

*definitely

Ruthietuthie · 11/04/2022 19:27

I love the brogues from "The Office of Angela Scott." I particularly like the Oxford styles (but not the more garish colors). They are EXTREMELY comfortable and really well made.
