Something to wear over maxi dress

thesnaleandthewhail · 02/04/2022 18:34

I have a few midi and maxi dresses for summer, loose ones. I'm wondering what kind of cardigan/light jacket could work with them for summer evenings? I'm not a massive fan of a denim or leather jacket to be honest. I'm thinking a cardigan but not in a granny way? I feel like it needs to be cropped. It also needs to go with several colours. Any ideas??

I feel like a denim or leather jacket is the best bet tbh, but what about a blazer? I'd do boyfriend but if the dresses are loose a fitted one might work better. Cardigans are difficult to pull off without it looking granny, especially in summer. Bomber jacket?

zhivagodr · 02/04/2022 18:44

I’d always go with a denim jacket. Difficult to find one that’s a good fit though. Same with leather, annoyingly - and I’ve never cracked that one!

Ginfilledcats · 02/04/2022 18:45

I wear a variety of jumpers - thick right now and thinner in summer (or still thick, it's still the UK lol) and tuck them up using the dresses belt or a belt from another dress so they appear cropped.
I also don't like denim, too stiff!

Edinburgh Woolen mill is probably not your first port of call, but I brought something like this a few years back to wear over a maxi dress.

lindyloo57 · 02/04/2022 19:07

I was going to take a yellow cardigan to wear over my maxi dresses when I go on holiday in the evening when its a little cooler, I was thinking maybe not now, and just wear my denim jacket

StCharlotte · 02/04/2022 19:09

M&S do a range of waist length cardigans. That would be my choice.

EmmaH2022 · 02/04/2022 19:10

I have this "denim" jacket but it's stretchy and comfy.

I've got a fine knit 3/4 sleeve black bolero/shrug that goes well over maxi dresses.
Really fine knit so doesn't look "granny cardi".
Smart without being stiff. I love it.

Oooh good ideas, thanks. I was thinking proportion wise that more waist/cropped would be better than sort of long of hip length? Yeah denim is too stiff for me really. Maybe a bomber?

Or a jumper, yes i like that idea

I like a utility/military jacket in khaki in the summer.

These to me scream granny - are they not? Am I hopelessly out of touch? I like the jumpers, but like OP, I'm also in search of cardigans or jackets that fit the bill- easy to take on and off or do up and undo when the temperature changes.
bravotango · 02/04/2022 20:04

Cropped jumper or short jacket (leather or denim)

NeinDanke · 02/04/2022 20:49

A jersey blazer? More relaxed than a regular blazer but more structured than a cardi.

Here we are with the casual ageism again.

@HelloDulling

I like a utility/military jacket in khaki in the summer.
This, and my beloved New Look denim jacket which is old, cropped and so soft. I've also got a cream All Saints denim jacket with frayed edges that softens the look and a cropped GAP black denim jacket, and a black jersey biker jacket style from Next all of which work well.

I've tried the shrug/cardigan look but like others, I felt like someone's granny.

????

How do you get ageism on a thread about what to wear over a maxi dress??

shinynewapple22 · 03/04/2022 09:53

@NeedWineNow
The casual ageism is comments such as yours 'feeling like someone's granny'.

lindyloo57 · 03/04/2022 10:24

I agree, i feel like a granny/ old, if I wear a shrug/ cardigan, I sorry but can't help how it makes me feel, not saying that someone else shouldn't wear them, it just me, just to add I am a nanny to 5 grandchildren.

PuppyMonkey · 03/04/2022 10:33

I don’t really like maxi dresses but the pic of the jumper over one look lovely.

Nitgel · 03/04/2022 10:35

I like wearing linen shirts over dresses when too hot for knitwear or a floaty kimono jacket thing

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/04/2022 11:35

You might feel unstylish or dowdy. Fine. But enough with the 'old' or 'like a granny' bullshit.

I like a cropped denim jacket but in cotton fabric rather than denim, eg khaki. Toying with a pale pink one for this summer.

Cardigans are tricky. Hard to get the length right but this sort of style can work.
